I have never done one of Bonnie's mystery quilts.
But I think I would love to do one this year!:)

DebLuvsQuiltng 10-28-2017 06:22 PM

They are well illustrated and the instructions are very clear. You should try one. You can always make 1/4th of the blocks for a wall hanging or lap quilt yo be sure. I have never been disappointed.

Kassaundra 10-28-2017 08:39 PM

They look harder then what they are, they have lots of pieces, but she breaks it down into easy units, just lots and lots of easy units!

You can buy the digital pattern on Bonnie's site. She was having a sale on downloaded patterns while she was in China. I don't know if it's ended since she's on her way home.

Periwinkle, very nice top. It shows up the designs well. I like the colors. I’m working on redoing the yellow patches to 1/2 purple and background fabrics. I’m not a big yellow person, so after I got it completed, I decided to take it apart and redo the blocks. I had to buy some fabric for the background and will work on it this month. Hopefully before she starts the next one.

I’m excited about her new mystery coming out. I’m also looking forward to the new thread in a few weeks.

I'm getting excited for the new mystery to come out.:)

Any day now!

Battle Axe 10-31-2017 02:49 AM

I didn't see anything on this a.m.'s feed. I've got an Allitaire started and ran out of one thing. Oh Oh, road trip to fabric store. I just hope it isn't blue.

How do we contact the admins so as to ask permission to start the new thread?

joe'smom 10-31-2017 06:08 AM

I figured it out and have contacted the admins and asked permission to start the new thread.

As always happens, I'm very tempted by Bonnie's colorway. I love those peaceful sunrise photos!

NZquilter 10-31-2017 07:49 AM

The corner ruler that Bonnie suggested is pretty pricey. I'm wondering if this ruler will work. What do you all think?

I watched a youtube video; it looks pretty handy. You don't have to draw the line.

I've never done a Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt but as I looked at her site I see that she has groups of color pallets. She has aqua to turquoise, warm & toasty browns (chocolate), coral to melon, white to cream to beige. So does she use all those color pallets or is she giving you suggestions as to what group you might like to make your quilt from? In other words, is she saying you could make the quilt with aqua to turquoise & another quilter might like to make her quilt using coral to melon colors, etc. I'm not sure I understand what she is saying with the colors. Thanks!

Bonnie is telling you the colors she has in her quilt. So this year it is the four colors ( using multiple color in the four color ranges). She is the queen of scrappy quilts, so she usually suggest you use up your scraps, or fat quarters etc, as much as possible. You don't have to even use her colors. It's all up to you. I’m undecided if i’m going to go limited scrappy or just yardage from the 4 colors. I want to do my background in 1 fabric color. Still undecided. Spending the next few weeks going through my stash and finish projects so I can start this on time.

Could someone let us know when the new thread is posted for this? Thank-you. I’m holding my breath for this one. LOL.

So we have a four color quilt (including the neutrals), or you could look at it as values. As I see it (from turning her photos to black and white), we have one dark (the brown), two mediums (the corals and blues) and one light (the neutrals). So you could choose any group of colors with a dark, 2 mediums and a light, depending on your taste and/or what's in your stash. You could do different colors, as Bonnie has, or a monotone (is that the correct term?), with different values of the same color.

NZquilter 10-31-2017 10:52 AM

I'll be using light/medium blue instead of Bonnie's aqua color, as that is what I have without buying anything. I have everything else, so I'm super pleased!

Cheesehead 10-31-2017 10:52 AM

Just got home from Lowe's with the color selections Bonnie chose. I know that I have plenty of the aqua/turquoise fabrics on hand but very little of the coral or brown fabric. If I decide to do this mq I will probably use yardage as I am not confident in my choices for a scrappy at this time. Can't wait to see everyone's choices in fabrics.

osewme 10-31-2017 12:54 PM

Thanks for the explanation. I won't be doing this but I love to see results from mystery quilts.

Kassaundra 10-31-2017 01:07 PM

I viewed Bonnies colors as a dark (brown) medium (aqua) light (neutrals) and a bright (coral) even though in the grey scale it is a medium, to me it read as a bright when compared to her other choices.

joe'smom 10-31-2017 01:25 PM

Her corals look fairly subdued to me (speaking of her fabrics, not the color card). The aqua seems brighter to me.

It's amazing what you can find when you scrounge. It seems I do have enough coral fabrics (though very subdued) to go with Bonnie's colors, at least for a smaller quilt. I will feel more confident once I get those color cards. Now I need to go look at those fat quarter bundles I have, to see if any would do for an alternate colorway.

QuiltingVagabond 10-31-2017 03:05 PM

Well, these colors are definitely among my personal faves, so I am making this mystery for sure! I may need to get some of the coral/melon but maybe not - pretty sure I can get this one 99% from stash! Will pull some later tonight.

Here's my fabrics I'll be using. All from my stash! Sorry the photo is so huge; I still don't know how to shrink photos on my iPod.

Kp3690 10-31-2017 03:54 PM

I can’t wait to try this one. Using brown is Definitely out of my comfort zone! I tend to avoid it like the plague. :D I’m excited to try something new and stretch my wings a little though. I ordered the rulers this morning and am ready to go! Now to just finish my other 3 WIP’s before Black Friday.

Your fabrics are beautiful and mellow, NZQuilter!

None of my fat quarter bundles seem suitable for this quilt, so I'll go with Bonnie's colors.

I only have the one brighter coral, and they are all pretty small pieces, so I don't know how far they'll get me. I will probably re-think the busier neutrals and look for some quieter ones.

Carol in WI 10-31-2017 04:27 PM

I told myself that I would not do it this year as I have too many other projects, but it is so enticing and I love the colors Bonnie suggested plus the prints that are already posted. You ladies give me courage to step outside my box.

retiredteacher09 10-31-2017 05:28 PM

I wasn't planning to do it either, Carol in WI, until I realized where Ringo Lake is located. I was fairly close to it this summer when I was shop hopping. Lol! I hope to find the lake when I next visit relatives in that area.

Goofy reason to do it especially since I haven't worked on last year's mystery since January, :)

I'm in--with green in place of aqua--not a blue fan.

Kassaundra 10-31-2017 05:34 PM

I really like Bonnie's colors this time better then any other I've seen, but I don't have those colors in any quantity in my stash and was really wanting to use mostly or all stash so I will again change the colors I use.

I also like Bonnie's colors but am determined to work from stash. I have browns but little or no melon and turquoise. I may substitute pink and blue for those colors. Or I may go a completely different way and use purple, grey and pink. Will pull them tomorrow and get pics for opinions.

I have this ruler:

http://www.shopfonsandporter.com/pro...ic-and-notions

I think these both will probably work, but we might have to pay attention to the directions. Like for example whether the rulers are marked with finished or unfinished sizes and adjust accordingly.

kristijoy 10-31-2017 09:50 PM

I have lots of aqua and aqua/green. I also think I can come up with the coral or warmy pinky. I don't have much peach. And neutrals I've been collecting. What I'm really missing in my stash is brown. I only have one brown that I would consider a dark. I do have lots of charcoal, but with the other colors being on the 'warm' side, I'm afraid that charcoal will be too cool, especially with warm neutrals. I bought a couple cream on cream neutrals last week that I was hoping to use in the project. I need to make some fabric pulls and play with it. But I'm thinking I'll need to buy some more brown.

I'm planning on make a small version so 1/2 of the units.

pennycandy 11-01-2017 01:44 AM

Am I the only one who thinks that Bonnie's color choices feel like southwest? It reminds me of Native American jewelry and blankets and the desert with the colorful sunrises and sunsets.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's projects as I won't be joining in this time. I will be downloading the directions if I decide to make this sometime in the future.

Here are some of my fabrics. I had trouble with the coral. For some reason this does not look like it has any punch. Coral is somewhere between pink and yellow, may be even some rust??? peach???

Who is going to run the thread? It has to be approved and put in the right section.

NZquilter 11-01-2017 03:14 AM

I like your corals, Battle Axe, lovely fabrics!

I hadn't thought of Bonnie's colors like that, pennycandy. Very interesting! I love how she chose a place in the USA as her inspiration this year. America is a beautiful country!

joe'smom 11-01-2017 06:08 AM

Battle Axe, those fabrics are gorgeous! I think of coral as being a pinkish peach color.

I've stolen some neutrals from my Double Delight stash, so I'm all set except for beefing up my coral and aqua a bit.

I wrote to the admins yesterday requesting permission to start the new thread; I don't know how long it usually takes to hear back from them. Once we have permission, anyone who likes can start the thread, and I think it will pretty much run itself from that point on.

NZquilter 11-01-2017 06:25 AM

I just PMed Podunk Princess and asked her if she would take the honors of leading us again on this MQ, as she has done the past few years. I can't wait to get started!!

Can I have opinions on my fabric please? I find brown extremely hard to work with. I actually like the 2 bigger pieces at the bottom, but they don’t seem to have quite enough warmth to match the paint chip. I also don’t have enough of just those 2, so I am thinking of using that smaller square as the 3rd. The horizontal browns at the top are my other choices. Thanks for your input!

Macybaby 11-01-2017 11:29 AM

Oh! Colors I LOVE. I love them so much, it's about what I used for last year instead of the ones Bonnie used LOL!!

I already have rulers that do the job of the essential triangle, and since I really dislike the folded corner method (hate the waste) I won't be buying any rulers this year.

Now to go spend some quality time with my stash.

Macybaby 11-01-2017 12:37 PM

I found it interesting that Bonnie said she dug deep and pulled out some 1970's fabric for her chocolate. I have an over abundance of chocolate, and most I got from buying out my older sister's stash (she's not sewn in 30 years) - all stuff she bought back in the 70's.

I've been looking more at what Bonnie selected. I think I "overthink" and end up getting too narrow in my selections. End up with a bunch of fabrics that read about the same from a distance. I've got to try harder to stay out of that box.
