kp3690, I think the top browns do look nicer with your corals and aquas.

Pretty much all of my coral are '70's prints. I picked up a bag full for only a quarter from my local thrift store. I have '30's retros in my blues too. I feel like I could do with more variety in my browns, some seems kind of flats to me, even though I have six prints. I have to go to Hobby Lobby next week for more fabric for another quilt (they say measure twice, cut once for a reason, lol!) and I will see what Browns they might have. A couple quarter yard pieces more won't break the bank :D

This was my first BH mystery and I just put the last stitches on the binding of my En Provence last night.
Whoo Hoo - just in time for the next mystery! I still need to create and sew on a label, and I would like suggestions, please. The quilt is a wedding gift for my daughter and her husband, now married a year and a half already. My quilt labels typically include my name, date of completion, my current location ( we have had several moves ). I give small wall hangings a title, such as "Scrap Garden". If the quilt was made to be gifted, I will add that persons name and reason, if appropriate, such as a birthday or infant date of birth. I would like to just have the label include their names and wedding date, then my info. Do I include the title, "En Provence" and add it was a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt to give Bonnie credit? Suggestions? |
I put the name of pattern and designer at the bottom of my labels, so it would be 'En Provence pattern by Bonnie Hunter.' If you want to commemorate that it was the Winter Mystery Quilt for 2016 you could add that, too.
Congratulations on finishing your quilt! |

It's a rainy day here, but thought I would try an inside photo of my En Provence.

Nice En Province! I'm glad that the name this year is something I won't struggle with spelling correctly :)
I did a first selection - http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...pspd3sivdy.jpg and realized I'd plopped myself right in the middle of my comfort zone. And I thought it looked a bit too "same" for a scrappy quilt. So I headed back to my stash and dug deeper. I did find the coral zippers I'd bought a year ago that I could not find two weeks ago when I wanted to use them. Here is the second go round. I went darker with both the aqua and coral, brought a bit more color into the neutrals but left the chocolate alone. Many of the corals are fat quarters, but I have enough different fabrics I won't need to use more than a fat quarter of any, so that should be a good mix. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psq9wrei04.jpg BTW - in real life all the aquas are very much aquas - on my monitor the darker ones look blue. |

I stopped at the quilt shop today to drop off some Linus Project quilts and looked around for browns. I found several that I liked. They are a little less warmy than hers, but I'm sure they will have a wonderful contrast with my other colors. I also bought a couple of neutral fat quarters.
And I splurged...I bought a couple color collections from the fat quarter shop in Aqua and 'Tangerine'. I can't wait until they show up! My birthday is in a couple weeks...so it's my b-day present to myself! :) |

I wrote to the admins yesterday requesting permission to start the new thread; I don't know how long it usually takes to hear back from them. Once we have permission, anyone who likes can start the thread, and I think it will pretty much run itself from that point on.

I'm sorry you won't be available, Podunk! We will really miss you!
I think I come across as kind of brusque and bossy when I post, and someone with a warm and welcoming style would be better. Would anyone like to take the lead this year? Macybaby, those photos are a real eye-opener! I always want a bunch of fabrics that look like your second photo, and I always end up with a bunch of fabrics that look like your first photo, LOL! |
I love that dandelion brown fabric, but I think the top group of browns look better w/ your other fabrics.

Can I have opinions on my fabric please? I find brown extremely hard to work with. I actually like the 2 bigger pieces at the bottom, but they don’t seem to have quite enough warmth to match the paint chip. I also don’t have enough of just those 2, so I am thinking of using that smaller square as the 3rd. The horizontal browns at the top are my other choices. Thanks for your input!

I plan on joining in on Bonnies Mystery this year and will follow along with all of you here on QB. I did not do the En Provence, but printed out the directions for my bucket list. I love that quilt! This willl be my second MQ. I love the colors this year, so I will stick to the colors Bonnie has suggested. Love Aqua and Coral.
@osewme - download or print out clues each week (pattern) and make it later after you see the reveal. That's what I did with En Provence and hope to make that one some day. |
For those of you who like Bonnie's colors, but don't have much in your stash, Whittles Fabrics has put together fat quarters again this year. whittlesfabrics.com

@katybob - that's great! Thanks for the information. I just looked at the fat quarters. They look spot on. Very convenient for those who do not have a lot of stash to shop.

These are some of my options. Each group would need some enhancement. For the purple/gray/pink group I need more purple and pink. I'm not sure about the brown/blue/gold group. I thought the golds might work but looking at the picture I might add pink or coral. There might be enough in the blue/coral/yellow group to make a half size quilt. I'd use a very light background on all three, possibly just one fabric.
|
@katybob, thanks for that link. I was having a great deal of trouble with the coral, so I ordered Whittle's coral group. I've ordered from them before and been pleased.
|
I am not much of a pink lover, but I think your best group is the first pink / purple group. Second choice for me would be the last blue and brown group.

quiltsRfun, those top corals are beautiful!
I think with each of your fabric groups, it might be hard to get enough contrast between the lights and a neutral. In fact, looking at the photos, it struck me that the lightest group in each photo could represent the neutral (excepting those darker grays). So for each group, you would just need to bring in another color. I think the corals and grays in the first photo look very nice together. Same with the blues and browns in the third photo, but have you checked that photo in black and white, to see if there is enough value difference between the blue and brown? What if you brought the peaches from your second photo down to the bottom group? |
What has to be done to set up a thread for "On Ringo Lake" and does it have to monitored or whatever by a certain individual? I don't know what involvement is required. To have the posts under the heading of En Provence is misleading as it stands now.
|
It seems I used the wrong method to try and contact someone for permission, but NZQuilter has offered to lead the new thread, and she will put a request in to PatriceJ., so we should be up and running sometime soon.

I'm done! Just in time for gift giving. Woo hoo!! :)
Quilted by Charisma |
That's gorgeous, Fraew! Who will be the lucky recipient?
|
That's so pretty, Freaw!! I love the matching bow!
|
Lovely. I also like the quilting. Thanks for sharing.
|
Wow, that looks gorgeous. Great way to package.
|
Looks great Fraew!
|
Thank you, thank you! I used left over binding for the bow. Clearly I measured wrong for that one. It is for my mom, surprised her with it last night.
|
How beautiful, Fraew! Charisma's quilting is wonderful, too. Who's the lucky recipient?
Leslie |
What a great finish Fraew! I am still working on quilting mine!
|
Your helpers did a great job holding up the quilt for that full view shot! :-) It's a big quilt and not so easy to take a picture of it. Wonderful finish, neat timing, and so fun to give to a mother. It seems like mothers always appreciate what their children make. :-)
|
Great job Fraew! I bet your mother was thrilled!
|
Thank you for the compliments and support to get this one done. Mom is very happy with her present.

It was my son's birthday last week, and I gave him the BH 2017 MQ, En Provence, that I made. It languished for months waiting for it's binding, which I finally sewed on in early January. It's not a great picture as the bottom of the quilt is cut off, but better than nothing! My biggest change to the pattern was that I did my own idea for the border, rather than using all 2" neutral squares as BH did.
|
Your border really frames the quilt. Congrats on the finish. Mine is still waiting to be quilted.
|
Beautiful Givio!
|
Wow, that looks great! It really gives it a different appearance. Nice colors.
Leslie |
givio, your En Provence looks great. I do like how you did the border, it really frames the quilt nicely.
