Nilla: Your color scheme is going to be so much fun. Really enjoy watching the quilts out of other color ways emerge. When I made the Orca I used my own colors and the secondary pattern didn't emerge, so now I'm a chicken. Jeanie: You nailed my reasoning. I love all of BH designs just the way she makes them, but for me, calming a few color with solids suits me better. My blues actually match the color samples pretty well, its my camera that seems to want more of an aqua blue. Wonder how much money you would have to spend on a camera to have it register the true color.

I've about decided not to do the mystery. I'm planning to finish my ongoing projects, and then choose one of Bonnie's patterns and make it on my winter break. I've always wanted to do one of her patterns--I'll print out the mystery; maybe I'll choose to make it! :)
|
Have never done one of her mysteries and this sounds like fun.

Love that Michigan theme. The Grand Hotel is truly grand. The colors are bold and classic for this kind or resort local. Lovely place to visit even if you can only afford to just walk through and see the beauty of the hotel and Michigan's most famous island with the Might Mac Bridge in the distance.
Three cheers for the Grand Hotel. I'll have to watch this mystery quilt just out of curiosity. I am far to busy to make it at this point in my life. |

Not sure I have enough of scraps for this. I do want my quilt to be scrappy and short on funds. Would purchasing charm squares work or are these just too small to use.
I just tried something new with charm squares that you might like. It a tutorial on Missouri quilts. I believe it's called Disappearing Pinwheels and there are several variations you can choose from. They are small - but fun!! I went to Lowes and could only get the gold color. Wonder if lots of people in my area are doing the mystery this year. LOL I'm going to stick with her colors this year. I love them and it's not something I would normally pick or even put them together. She promised this year will not be as intense as last year's mystery. I still need to get the borders on my Celtic Solstice. |

I decided to join the Mystery Quilt. I've never done a MQ before, I like to know what I'm making. But after studying other MQ's that Bonnie has done - and seeing how many different colors she's using - I'm *guessing* that I'm going to like this quilt. The number of different colors she's using promises a "complicated" quilt and I like complicated. I also love the Grand (my first Honeymoon was there) so that was a clincher.
I'm going to be starting a Dear Jane - hopefully next week. I know I'll want something else to work on in-between DJ blocks and I think this project is the answer!! I'm undecided on the yellow though ... I have two I could use. One is a blender, the other a print. Both are pictured with my stash of the other colors in the palette (except the neutrals). Which yellow do you think I should use?? http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...d=495137&stc=1 |
DogHouseMom, I prefer the blender yellow. It is very creamy looking just like the paint card. The print is a little too busy and introduces orange which won't be in the quilt anywhere else. Just my opinion.
|
I think I will do this one, will try to pick up the color cards tomorrow.
DogHouseMom, I like the print! |

I'm leaning toward the blender for the color and simplicity. If this quilt is as busy as I think it's going to be, the blender might be the best option. I was hoping for something with *some* design to it, but I want to shop my stash, not the LQS!! |
Doghousemom - Looks like a great assortment of fabrics. I also prefer the blender.

I bought my yellow fabric this morning, and gathered up some of the other colors from my stash and scraps. Here are some of the larger pieces. I've got a bunch of 2-1/2" squares, too, that may be useful. :)
Edit: I'll cut around those orange flower middles in the turquoise scraps. They kind of stick out like a sore thumb. LOL! http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...d=495179&stc=1 |
Pretty fabrics Moonrise! You did good!

Go with the yellow blender Doghousemom. Sure is fun to look at everyone's stash and see fabrics I recognize. Sort of like an adult I Spy, LOL

I've never done one of Bonnie's mysteries but I think I'll join in on this one. Do we have to sign up on her site or do we just check the website when it's time for a clue?

Got the color swatches, went through the stash, as luck would have it, I have some (enough) of all the colors, but...
I still went online shopping for "something just a little better" - I am hopeless when it comes to sticking with the fabric I already own! :( |
I got paint chips and went shopping today, too. I have hardly any fabrics in the stash that are the right colors. I'm sure I over-bought!

While I was shopping the "Spot the Dot" (clearance) fabrics at Hancock Fabrics, I was told they would all be $1 off per yard from the 19th thru the 25th! They are giving out the coupons for that this week, so stop by and get yours! $1 a yard off, when the fabric is already reduced to $2-$3 a yard, is a great deal. I'm going back for more, for my charity quilting. They have some really nice fabrics on the clearance table.

Here are the fabrics I have collected for the quilt. I have a ton more blacks and neutrals I can pull from, if needed.
If anyone 'sees' anything glaringly wrong, please tell me. |
Now that I'm seeing it in a photo, I think the turq. with the purple on it is too light. Think I will pull it out.

I'm going to play along this year. Here are my original choices for fabric. Had this for over a year now. But wanted the teal, melon and green too. SO I called the shop in the upper Midwest (Quilt Heaven- Temperance MI) and the shop owner, Lois, was willing to cut & ship with a CC. YEAH Lois. I've only been in that shop once when on a vacation.
But I'm starting with these. and the shipment should be here in a few days. I'm excited.. THANK YOU for starting a thread. |

Yours are beautiful too, Jackie... what will you use for your neutrals?
|
I just happened to be in Lowe's this afternoon and I just happened to have the color numbers in my purse so I picked up the paint chips!
I'll have to see if I have enough scraps before I commit. |
I would never think to put together the colors that Bonnie is suggesting. Guess I'll be out of my "comfort box" on this one. Someone said, "variety is the spice of life". Should be an interesting spicey journey. This will be my first BH quilt. Hope my little hardware has the color chips so that I can get started. I am, however, a little apprehensive about the black and may be subbing chocolate for it. Will see when I start pulling fabrics.
|
The chips are Valspar, Suz. You could call ahead and ask your store if they carry Valspar... If not, Lowes does.
I would never have thought to plan a quilt using paint chips, but it's kind of genius! Really helps when going through your stash or taking them to the fabric store. |
Jackie, your fabric is beautiful!

I'll be playing along too. Come on November - wait - oh yeah, that's Thanksgiving too, meaning family time!
|
I went by my local Lowes yesterday to get the paint cards & the pink & turquoise were out. Must be a lot of quilters in Snellville preparing to do this mystery!
|
Have the paint chips.....two different Lowes, lol ...............but have them all, now to shop the stash.
seems like just looking this over and have been bitten by the bug. |
I am torn about doing this mystery. I have not finished Celtic Solstise from last year, just need to add the borders but it is in the UFO pile. Also took a class with Bonnie on Wednesday so have Winston Ways to finish. Was able to complete one block in an all day class.
I am thinking I may stick with her colors this year if I have enough in my stash, want to stay on the no buying moritorium. I am really busy and don't need another UFO but going to stop by Lowes today and see if I can get the paint chips. I have never done it this way before but like the colors. |
Burbank Lowes has them....Northridge is missing the 5008-10
|
Come on, join the club Quiltadict. My Celtic Solstice is under the needle of my Sweet 16, waiting for me to quilt it. At least I have gotten that far with it, LOL. My goal is to finish a doll quiltand catch up on two mystery quilts before the November 15th first cutting clue. I even stocked up on zip lock bags for the clues.
|
zip-lock bags.................gulp..................the pieces are that small ? ? ?
|
Lisa, I know just how you are feeling. I've decided to do this year's mystery even though I'm going to be taking 3 classes with Bonnie next week in Texas (read this as starting 3 new quilts) and then the mystery quilt will start up next month giving me a 4th quilt to work on. Guess all that sewing will keep me from getting into any mischief during the holiday season!
