The one gallon size Sunliten. I write the clue number and description of the pieces on a piece of card stock and slip it into the bag. When the clue is finished it goes into a labeled tote. That is the only way I can control fabric chaos. The ensuing scraps go into another tote labeled for the mystery to do a wild and crazy scrappy quilt.

I have most of my fabric and am sure getting excited about this. As a "newbie" , I have a few questions. 1. How often do the clues post? 2. Approximately how much quilting time do you spend getting each clue completed? 3. How easy is the Inklingo to use and does it help save time?

Can't wait to get started but I have 2 jobs and not a lot of quilting time, but REALLY want to keep pace because I am thinking some of the fun is the virtual quilt along with everyone else.

DogHouseMom 10-19-2014 06:19 AM

Nancy ... I've never done a mystery, but I've completed a lot of quilts and can (or can't) help with some of your questions.

The clues post weekly - from Bonnie's site "Our first clue goes live on Friday, November 28th, with each new clue being released on consecutive Fridays until we are complete. Plan on 6 to 8 clues – I haven’t decided how to break it down yet. Remember, it’s a mystery for a reason and some things need to be revealed without us knowing every detail first!"

She further states that it is very likely you will not complete everything you need to do within the week before the next clue is released, but to put the project aside and start the next clue anyway. That way you will be ready to follow subsequent clues. And remember to print all of the clues for yourself as they WILL be removed from the site at some point. Don't expect to finish all the cutting and sewing from one clue to the next would be my best advice. Plan on having some of them done and those along with your printed directions are your reference to finish the remainder on your own time after all the clues are posted.

Being a mystery, it's impossible to tell at this juncture how much time it will take without knowing how many pieces, size of pieces, construction (i.e. are there Y seams? (probably not!)), etc. We only know that there are 6 main colors which is quite a few - so I'm assuming the block will be fairly complicated (i.e. many pieces), and there is probably a sashing (just guessing from the black and neutrals). My assumptions are also based on some of Bonnie's other patterns where many colors were used.

I've never used Inklingo so can't help yo with that one.

Caroline S 10-19-2014 06:46 AM

The Grand Illusion will be my 3rd Bonnie Mystery. If there are going to be Half Square Triangles used in the quilt (I am sure there will), I will be using Trianglulations software to make them and I don't mind removing the paper. In my opinion Inklingo takes more time as the fabric needs to be adhered to the freezer paper and fed through the printer.

ok, that was really great info. I am in for this......are the clues going to be on this site or ?

The links will be posted on her blog.... www.quiltville.blogspot.com. Just click on the Grand Illusion button on the top. If there are links at the bottom of the post that are live, the clue has been posted. 1st clue due Thanksgiving weekend. Happy stash diving!

I just wanted to add that for HSTs, Bonnie loves to use the Easy Angle ruler. I used mine for the first time with the 600 HSTs in Roll, Roll Cotton Boll. It's a nice option you may want to try. :-)

You can pretty much count on lots and lots of small pieces in Bonnie's quilts. I don't think I've done one yet that wasn't over 3,000 pieces when it was said and done. But as you don't cut it all at once, it's not too overwhelming - and she's already said that this year's will be easier than last year's.

Although I've done several of her quilts, 3 or 4 of them as mysteries, I have yet to stay on schedule. Working full time and being gone or having company for both Thanksgiving and Christmas is a guarantee for me to not get it done, but I keep plugging away. Eventually they get done. My goal is within the year; sometimes I meet that goal and sometimes not. There are both Yahoo and Facebook groups devote to all things Quiltville; you'll find lots of support in either, should you choose to join. People continue to work on and encourage others long after the mystery is revealed.

Here are my fabrics. I will be using the yellow that is next to the pink. All of mine are toned down a bit from the colors on the paint chips. As my normal palette includes almost all earth tone and CW repro's, these are as bright as I can comfortably go!

BTW - my avatar quilt is the Quiltville mystery from 2 years ago. It's called "Easy Street;" I did not use the suggested colorway.

QuiltingVagabond 10-19-2014 01:39 PM

peace and joy, I have the yellow you chose to use but not enough! It is a dead on color match though isn't it!
And I had two other pieces of yellow from that same line of fabric so I would have had enough if I used all 3 different yellows, but I was afraid to mix them since Bonnie is using the yellow as "constant".

Love your fabrics btw...

peaceandjoy 10-19-2014 05:01 PM

QuiiltingVagabond it's available on Etsy for $6/yd! (I don't know what the shipping is.) There are others who are using more than one yellow, too. It's funny - this fabric line has pink, turquoise, yellow, green... Sounds familiar, lol!I also have the print that has birds on the wire; am tentatively planning to use that for the binding. Will cut it on the bias so the "stripes" run diagonally.

Podunk Princess 10-19-2014 06:49 PM

Quilt Cam is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday night. Bonnie will post a confirmation of date and time on her blog on Monday. It's usually at 9:00 p.m. eastern time. She'll be talking about the MQ during the session for anyone who is interested in getting more information. If you can't watch it "live" it will be archived for later viewing on You Tube or by clicking on the quilt cam tab on her blog.

lfstamper 10-19-2014 06:58 PM

peaceandjoy, your fabrics are fabulous! I so want to do this mystery quilt but am not sure about the time commitment.

quilt addict 10-20-2014 11:24 AM

Went by Lowes on Friday and got 2 of the color chips but the other two were out of stock. Did not make the trip to the other Lowes. I stopped by Rosie's to pick up some FQs for secret santa but then went to the sales closet and purchased some black fabrics because have very few of the mostly black to use for the mystery. So not totally committed yet but sure leaning that way. Guess if I get my borders on last year's mystery I would feel better.

Only Bonnie knows what units we will be putting together but for sure there is Half Square Triangles (HST) since she does include the Easy Angle Ruler in the list of supplies. Since I have learned how to use it, I like it because I am making near perfect HST and not wasting the fabric of making them larger and then squaring them up. Much faster then the old way I was doing it. I have not tried the Thangles or other paper products.

Baggies - big YES. I use them also to keep the steps organized. The way the mystery works is you make some parts and then another part and then eventually you start to put them together. It is a good way to keep track of each step for me too.

CindyA 10-21-2014 12:55 AM

I am excited! I have almost all my fabrics gathered and just leave them out to enjoy them until we get started. :)

I have the top (except for the border) together. I keep holding on to her statement that this year won't be as intense! LOL

I always keep the zipper/snap bags that curtains/sheets and other linens come in. That's what I use for the different clues. They've been big enough for each clue. When the next clue comes out and I stop working on the current one I just leave myself a little note to remind me where to start up again when I get back to it. Worked well for me.

Joy Higdon 10-21-2014 02:20 AM

I have never done a MG before but I think I will give this one a try.

Belfrybat 10-21-2014 04:03 AM

I'm also planning on doing this but with a single fabric for each colour. I ordered the yellow/gold from Connecting threads, so as soon as it arrives will pull my other fabrics. I live 60 miles from the closest Lowe's so I go by the colours on the screen. I also don't like pink, so will probably use a rose. But we'll see.

I'm wondering if there won't be flying geese in this one since Bonnie usually uses the Easy Angle Companion in making flying geese, and all she mentions is the regular Easy Angle ruler. That would be lovely if so, as I'm not too keen on making the number and the size of FG she usually uses.

SusanErler 10-21-2014 04:38 AM

I will be doing the Mystery Quilt this year too. This is my first one, and I'm excited!

I'm not a pink person, so I'm substituting it with a red-orange color. I didn't have enough in my stash, so I ordered online. I'll post a pic of my fabrics when I get them.

Looking forward to Quiltcam tonight too! :-)

Emma S 10-21-2014 05:17 AM

I wonder what kind of a impact BH's mysteries have on fabric sales. Might be a coincidence but a couple days after Bonnie posted her colors Fabric.com had a 15% sale on her colors.

sewbizgirl 10-21-2014 06:04 AM

I love everyone's fabrics! Mine are all ready to go! How will we ever wait until THANKSGIVING... so far away!

quilt addict 10-21-2014 12:23 PM

Rosie's in San Diego is ordering fabric specifically to match the colors for the quilt. they also have laminated the paint color chips that you can use to shop with in the store.

SunlitenSmiles 10-21-2014 01:36 PM

trying to think of an excuse to go to SanDiego....it is only a couple of hours drive if you pick the right time of day...like before dawn....and wait for the store to open....and get half way back before noon and have lunch at Rubys and speed the rest of the way home before four.....can you tell I have done this before.

JeanieG 10-21-2014 01:42 PM

Sunliten - what an excuse to drive to San Diego (love it) - for me it would be a 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive with good traffic! LOL

SunlitenSmiles 10-21-2014 03:45 PM

JeanieG....tomorrow I am going to check at CANDY'S in the valley............they have a huge selection and are tuned in to what is going on internet wise

Emma S 10-21-2014 04:54 PM

Roadtrip, roadtrip! Would be a 12 hour trip for me, nope, only way I'm getting there is to teleport. I'll be the one sparkling into existence.

Your colors are great! I was surprised how different how the colors appeared on the Lowe's color cards vs how they appeared on my computer!

LFStamper ... the only time commitment you need to make is to print the clues each week they come out. After that, you have all the clues and you can work on the remainder of the quilt in your own time. I don't think very many (if any) people actually FINISH all the work from each clue before the next clue is released.

SunlitenSmiles 10-22-2014 05:00 AM

checked the stash and have everything I need........what about this ruler, EZ angle, is it really that helpful ???

I have the June Tailor marking and squaring up tool...and it sure is better on my olde hands than previous methods.

Is this EZ angle another advancement or just a parallel method???

I find hundreds of tiny HST a bit intimidating, so planning on doing half as many of each step for a smaller quilt (as Bonnie suggested).

.

AlvaStitcher 10-22-2014 09:00 AM

nancysp, just sent you a PM regarding the color paint sample chips

I picked up the paint chips this morning. Now for the fun of pulling fabric from the stash! Doesn't take much to please me, does it? LOL

quilt addict 10-22-2014 09:27 AM

I'm going to swing by Lowes tonight after work and see if they have stocked up on the paint chips. They were out last week. I watched Bonnie's quilt cam last night for the first time and sewed HST for that hour along with heating up and eating dinner. It was interesting. She talked alittle about Grand Illusion but not much more than what is already in the post. Some folks were talking about their color selections that are different than hers.

I find the easy angle ruler to help with the HST. It saves me time and fabric because I could never get them right in previous methods. It has eliminated my need to oversize the fabric and then have to trim down the excess to get them square and the right size. My previous method was make an square, draw diagonal lines on the back, sew two lines and then cut in half.

JeanieG 10-22-2014 11:04 AM

SunlitenSmiles - here is a video from Bonnie's website on using the Easy Angle Ruler:

http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/videos.html

SunlitenSmiles 10-22-2014 01:57 PM

Thank You QuiltAddict and JeanieG........looks like the ruler would really help because the squaring up the oversized ones hurts my hands.....I tried the method where you sew WOF strips and then cut with a 2 1/2" sq.ruler and that was too twisty and turny even with the rotating mat and the straight grain was already sewn and that left bias edges ..ugg...so the way Bonnie shows it with the imaginary hinge....really looks like it will be best for me ! ! ! Thanks again !

sewbizgirl 10-22-2014 02:32 PM

Thanks for the video... I was wondering how the easy angle ruler worked. I think it will be simpler than my usual way of making HSTs.

quiltsRfun 10-22-2014 09:53 PM

Two things I was hoping for: No chevrons and no tri-recs ruler. Those really gave me trouble with Celtic Solstice. So now I see there's no tri-recs blocks but will have to wait and see for the chevrons.

AlvaStitcher 10-23-2014 07:16 AM

I picked up an extra set of paint samples if anyone needs them. PM with your address and I will put in mail to you. I still have to pick out the fabrics from my stash. Will probably need to go to store to pick up the yellow focus fabric. Such a shame. LOL

I need to watch the video, but can't do that at work here. I have the Quilt in a day half square ruler made by Eleanor Burns. Do they work the same way?

Is that the triangle square-up ruler? If so, no, they're not at all alike.
