Thanks for showing your beautiful fabrics, bennie...

Anita, (ILoveToQuilt), I couldn't help but notice the quilt in your avatar looks like it was made with similar colors to the Grand Illusion color scheme. It kind of gives us a preview... :)

SunlitenSmiles, not sure what you mean by ND33, but right now I am putting finished squares together for a king size quilt top, have a quilt loaded for machine quilting, have another 2 waiting their turn and I have no idea how many quilts I have the material and patterns for. When I was working, if I saw something, I bought every I would need to make that quilt. My stash isn't a real stash - almost everything is earmarked for a quilt so do I need to get the material for another quilt??? No, but that might not stop me. I have bought more since I retired. Now if I just live long enough to finish all of it!

dianeinsterling 11-19-2014 09:41 AM

I'm in. This will be my first BH quilt. Can't wait to get started. Three friends that I sew with will also be doing the Grand Illusions Quilt.

ILoveToQuilt 11-19-2014 12:47 PM

Sewbiz: I am partial to the "hot" colors, so this MQ is right up my alley! Since I tend towards those colors, didn't have to buy any fabric with the exception of the yellow.

Yes, the FB page (Quiltville Open Studio) is full of chatter about the MQ and pix of the fabrics folks have chosen. Very similar to the QB, but usually only deals with Bonnie's quilts. Lots of pix of her previous quilts and projects that people have been working on.

Only 11 more days to go!

Cindy60545 11-19-2014 02:27 PM

Well, I've caught up reading this thread. I'm in. This isn't my 1st mystery quilt, but it's a 1st BH one. I've got all my fabrics ironed & ready to go. I've been reading some of the tips for organizing along the way, so I'll probably make use of those suggestions. We've got a group of us going to do this mystery & will be getting together to work on them. This is going to be fun! Can't wait for the 1st clue!

I did that same thing - bought while I was working - and I'm still buying if I see something I really like. I have been retired a year and a half and I am making my way thru my projects. I needed to get a couple pieces for the GI.

wow that is what I did also and have been retired 10 years now.....+/_ 25 quilts nowand bearly made a dent, but it is ok my
Daughter and Grandaughter-in-law have both taken up quilting...and ocasionally shopped from my stash, it is so much fun.

must be a different Cam who's your grandchild.....I was referring to a Notre Dame awesome student named Cam.
It is a great name......mabey one day I will have a greatgrandchild named Cameron.

Cam's gram 11-19-2014 03:48 PM

I bought because it was something I really loved and once a material is gone, that's it. I only know of one particular print that has been made more than once. A lady I worked with said "Oh you're buy now because when you retire you won't have any money". Had to explain to her fabric is like clothes, usually do not see the exact same thing again. She was a dingbat so I didn't even try to explain planning for retirement and what all the company we worked for had for retirement.

baronreads 11-19-2014 04:39 PM

I went shopping today and got most of my fabric. I know I won't make the full size quilt, not sure what size I'll make but only bought 1 yd of yellow as opposed to 1 5/8 yd. Do you think that should be OK? I'm happy with my colors, but feel a little light on the green, even though the green is the one with the least amount of yardage. I still might look for a few more to add. I can't wait to start! I probably won't get to start on Friday since my kids will still be home, but it will be nice to see pics from those of you who are on the ball, before I actually start. I have a few friends who are going to QAL on this too, it will be fun!

miss_sonja 11-19-2014 09:27 PM

I found my yellow and know what I want for the green, blue and pink. Black I have but considering using white for the neutral. I am going with the new American Made solids line.

The whole quilt top and backing is the finished size - the only thing I do different is cut the batting into 3rds. I quilt first the middle, attach the batting back on one side via about 1" to 1 1/2" of fusible interfacing, quilt that section, then do the same with the other side. You could also whip stitch the interfacing back together by hand, I have done this also. They actually have pre-made strips to fuse the batting together, but I just cut the interfacing myself - much cheaper. (Clear as mud!)

Jeanie, this is exactly how I've been doing my quilting. It's so much easier than pushing-and-pulling the entire batting. Thanks for the confirmation that I'm not doing things "wrong"!

Well, looking at everyone's bright & cheery fabric picks I decided I'd make mine that way too...so scrapped the first choice of the pastels (will save for another quilt) & this is my final pick. Look ok? The green is actually brighter in person.

Looks like you did what I did...took a fabric with the colors & worked from that. Makes for easy work. And that fabric can be a border, binding, or go on the back.:)

Evie,

Weren't you with us for some of the Farmer's Wife quilts we were doing? Laurie Hird has another book coming out next year - The Farmer's Wife 1930's Book. Here is a link to her blog. We will be starting a new thread for the quilt in this book next year when the book becomes available. If anyone is interested, here is a link to her blog. Her quilts are sampler type quilts - good way to use up all your small stash pieces.

Well, I'm not as adventurous as most of you, I chose single cloth for each color. Here's mine.

Ah, Jeanie, yes I did the Farmer's Wife. I have one twin-size sewn together but have yet to quilt it. I just am not good at getting to the quilting! :o I loved doing the FW blocks. I did not do the Pony Club but look forward to seeing what her next project will be. Thanks for the heads up.

I think I've finally settled on a group of fabrics from the stash that I can live with for this mystery quilt. The first group was just way too "loud" for my comfort zone. Here goes.....

I really like this, the hot pinks were to much for me too.

sewbizgirl 11-20-2014 09:18 PM

Can't wait to see how all these color variations will turn out.

quiltsRfun 11-20-2014 10:33 PM

Podunk, I love your colors. I usually favor more muted colors as well but this time decided to go bold. Is that what they'd call "outside my comfort zone?"

CindyA 11-21-2014 02:58 AM

Podunk Princess, love your colors can wait to see how different it looks from the other GIs! Especially love that dragonfly b&w.

m-fay 11-21-2014 03:30 AM

I'm not going to do this one but I will be following it to see what everyones turn out like

BerninaGirl 11-21-2014 10:11 AM

I am so ready to get the first clue.
We have less than 10 days till we start.

SunlitenSmiles 11-21-2014 10:45 AM

counting the hours.......what time, and time zone, do the clues post.......'cause I could be there...be there right at mid-night......rotary cutter in one hand and the other hand hovering over the ruler rack.... not that I am impatient or anything like that :)

does anyone know how to insert a countdown day/timer thing like they have for sports stuff....
would be great to have on this chat link !

michelleoc 11-21-2014 11:07 AM

One week from today!!!!!

Pam H 11-21-2014 12:36 PM

Can't help you with a timer but I think I read that last year she posted the first clue as 12:01 am. Most likely EST.

miss_sonja 11-21-2014 12:42 PM

Got most of my fabric today! Still need to decide if my neutral will be white or cream. I'm using all solids from tthe new American Made line-the colours are great. Gotta figure out how to include a picture!

My daughter has an app on her phone that does count downs. She like to count down to big events- like her birthday, christmas, big events like a concert (we went to see one direction in October).

Cindy, I think it will come out outstanding. Really, there isn't anything that doesn't work with Bonnies patterns :)

brookemarie19 11-21-2014 02:00 PM

I have finally caught back up with all the posts. Everyone's picks look awesome! I am starting to get a little impatient for the mystery to begin.... It's making me second guess my color choices. I went for camo, but really like these original colors. Choices, choices lol

I love the polkadots
BUT TOTALLY AWQESOME - what is that multicolor fabric on the bottom and how will you use it?

SunlitenSmiles 11-21-2014 03:55 PM

Thinking 12:01 a.m. eastern is 9:01 p.m. in California...........:) forget the Turkey, have to stay awake for this

Rhondals 11-21-2014 05:28 PM

I ordered more fabric today. At 5bucks a yard, or less, it' no longer too expensive to make a quilt.
