Will you guys post a picture of the first block after you make it?

We will probably all be doing that! At least, I hope so...

Blocks don't come together till towards the end. We'll be making that units that go into the blocks. I plan to post my progress as I go along. Probably others will as well. And there's usually some guessing as to how it will all go together. That's part of the fun.

pennycandy 11-17-2014 12:10 AM

I've never done a mystery quilt and am curious as to how this will unfold. I'm busy with a project and won't join in on this one. Looking forward to seeing pictures of everyone's work. Have fun ladies!

oldcatlady 11-17-2014 08:48 AM

You know, I may go with the blue/purple color instead of the pinks. I'll have to see when I pull my fabrics. I have A LOT of blue and purple.

When BH started talking about the flower that the hotel is known for I was sure she was going to say lilacs, but instead it was the geraniums on the porch.

SunlitenSmiles 11-17-2014 09:20 AM

there is a really beautiful line of lavender fabrics featured in the quilt stores now.............hummmmmm....

but I have all the colors in my stash and must be frugal and use stash first
that rattly noise you hear is me thinking.

michelleoc 11-17-2014 09:41 AM

for those that have done BH's MQ before, I understand that she starts out with having us put certain sections and doing the blocks later. So do you just keep each section in it's own baggie? How do you keep your stuff organized?

ScubaK 11-17-2014 09:47 AM

I have the paint chips...now to shop my stash and get the fabric...

Yes, just keep each step in a separate bag. You could also printout and include instructions fore each step. I make notes and include these as well. It helps when I come back to finish up.

CindyA gave the newbies some helpful hints earlier in the thread, which I have quoted below. We're getting close!

The next week, when the next clue is released, just put the first week aside and move on to the second clue. Keep doing that as each clue is released. At least then you will be keeping up with what she's talking about and you'll have a little bit done of each step. So when she gets towards the end and you are starting to assemble the blocks you can see what the block(s) look like.

To keep myself organized (and it worked even though I'm not a naturally organized person) I kept each week in plastic bags. I happened to have the zipper kind that curtains or linens come in and used those. When I put aside an unfinished week (in order to move on to the next clue) I wrote myself a couple of notes and stuck it in the bag with the fabric to help me remember where to pick up again at a later date. Example: "have completed cutting all 2" squares and have sewn 30 out of the 45 four patches. Need to sew 15 more four patches to finish this clue."

I was such a good girl, I brought my paint chip samples to the Houston Quilt Show and bought all of my fabric there. I know Bonnie advocates scrappy but I went more of a tye-dye style. Then I was posing for the photo op and got into a conversation with someone who hadn't got her paint chips yet, so since I was finished with them, I gave her mine! My fabric has since been pre-washed, ironed and starched, all I need now is the black and neutral and I'm good to go! I think I'll be buying the missing parts over the weekend so I'm all ready for Black Friday to get started!

quiltsRfun 11-17-2014 11:20 AM

Prissnboot, thanks for the reminder that I need to starch my fabric. I started off last year without and had much better results after I starched my fabric.

So sorry to be so late getting back to you. It was Cozy Quilts in El Cajon. I did get wrapped up in by 10 yards and get 5 yards free. So now have plenty of fabric for the mystery and a backing for another quilt.

Podunk Princess 11-17-2014 02:07 PM

I'll be so glad when the first clue comes out and I have to actually start cutting and sewing. Why? you ask....because last night I spent time in my stash (again) swapping out fabrics for this MQ. I think this time I've got it but you never know. There's still time to do it again, and again, and again........I hate it when I do this!

Oh yes, Bonnie is big on chain piecing, for sure.

I'm looking forward to the start of this mystery. But I'm away the first weekend :( so I'll be getting a late-ish start on it when I get back the following Monday.

Ga Gigi 11-18-2014 02:20 AM

Did Bonnie give any clues last night on her quilt cam?

I think that I have most of the colors needed, but I am having a very hard time finding that particular shade of green in anything or anyplace. Very limited close fabric shopping and online, it is so hard to figure exactly what shade a color really is, sometimes, what you order is a far cry from the real shade.

Jingle 11-18-2014 04:16 AM

Very nice color selections Ladies. I don't think I would like to dew along. I like to make my quilts faster.

Sophie2 11-18-2014 05:02 AM

I've never done a BH mystery quilt. I am so looking forward to this one. I decided to go with her colors - a little outside my comfort zone, but I think the colors are really pretty. I was able to pull most from my stash. This week I started doing a Leaders and Enders project of BH and love the thread I am saving by doing L&E. Takes a little longer to do the main project, but the thread I am saving makes it worth it. Only a week and a half to wait for the first clue!

IQuiltnFL 11-18-2014 05:10 AM

I'm doing Grand Illusion to remind me of a fun trip we took to Mackinac Island. We hope to visit the UP this year. Oh, and because Bonnie's Mysteries are a lot of fun. I always learn from Bonnie Hunter.

IQuiltnFL 11-18-2014 05:18 AM

I did exactly what was described by this post and when I had to pick it back up as a UFO (got interrupted halfway) I had no problems. Most segments were packaged and the two last clues were right with the pieces and parts in ziplocks. I'm almost finished. I can't wait for the new Quiltville mystery, Grand Illusion. We even have a FB group meeting in my area as the clues are released. This is going to be a lot of fun!

Karamarie 11-18-2014 05:23 AM

I appreciate all of you sharing your fabrics and paint chips as a Lowes store is not close to where I live and I may be able to pull something together from your pics - looks like fun.

baronreads 11-18-2014 06:10 AM

I'm just getting back into quilting again, but still consider myself a newbie. I'm going to jump in and do the mystery quilt as a way of getting my feet wet again. I'm a knitter mostly and love KALs, it keeps me interested and I love the camaraderie! I love the look of scrappy quilts and the colors are right up my alley. I inherited my MIL fabric stash, so I'm hoping to pull a lot from there. I do know she had a lot of neutrals. I look forward to following and learning from all of you!

Emma S 11-18-2014 07:00 AM

Donna: Probably one of the great advantage to having a stash that goes back many years. I've noticed the grass greens have disappeared in my local store, In favor of the shades that used to be called Avacado green.
Julie: Welcome to the Mystery and to the Board.
I finally couldn't wait so I started BH's Pineapple Blossom quilt. Using scraps, not that it is going to make a dent in my pile. It goes really fast, with a great result, I would definitely recommend it to anyone that wants to use scraps.

You can use a different shade of green. Just be sure there is contrast between your green and aqua. Bonnie's colors are just a suggestion. This is your quilt so you can make it your own by choosing your own colors if that's what you want!

This is so true; shopping on line is hit and miss, and the quality of the photo representations on the websites varies widely fabric to fabric, even on the same site. Keep in mind that it isn't necessary to match the color card exactly, even if you are sticking to Bonnie's color scheme. Anything that looks generally grassy (not too yellow, not too blue) will probably go well.

SueSew 11-18-2014 11:00 AM

I just caved on using only my stash/scraps (or lack thereof) ...failure of vision.

I ran out to Joanne's. They have a lot of grassy green. I am not as scrappy as our Fearless Leader (hah pun intended!!!) so I am using very similar greens, more tone on tone than KYITA. PM me for the rude explanation! :)

Cam's gram 11-18-2014 03:13 PM

I started reading the posts about BH's MQ back when they started. Didn't know anything about it but am now educated. All of you are making it very hard not to participate! I got enough projects here waiting for me but I'm feeling left out!!! Plus I don't have time to go shopping for the fabrics I don't have with guests coming this weekend and having Thanksgiving dinner next week, appts, etc. I keep telling myself no.

Belfrybat 11-18-2014 04:27 PM

Resistance is futile!

Come on over to the 'dark side'... LOL! You can do it in your own time frame. There are plenty of people still finishing up the last MQ, Celtic Solace, and it ended quite a while ago.

my-ty 11-18-2014 05:31 PM

I have been following this thread since it started, and kept reminding myself... No new projects... No new projects ... guess what ... I have my fabric ready for my first ever Mystery Quilt. As a newer quilter, I have a small stash, so I decided to use Xmas fabric (no camera handy). We will see how it goes....

SunlitenSmiles 11-18-2014 05:38 PM

wondering Cam's Gram.....would that be ND33 ?

Windblown 11-18-2014 06:04 PM

I'm going to try BH MQ, a first for me. I like all the chat, and help that you all so generously provide on this site. It's like a Quilt Bee. I have wanted to try one but last years kind of put me off. It was beautiful but more than I wanted to try then.
I have most of my fabric ready. I have decided to go with BH colors choices except for the pink,I am replacing it with lighter shades of lavender. When I get them all together I will post a photo. I'm getting so excited, this will be my first scrappy quilt!

Emma S 11-18-2014 06:12 PM

I love that so many first timers are joining! The fellowship and the enthusiasm are the best part. If anyone is wavering please fall over, you'll like it.

ILoveToQuilt 11-18-2014 06:27 PM

First time for me doing either a MQ or one of Bonnie's quilts - new on both counts. Fabric all prepared (only had to buy the yellow as the rest I had in my stash) and I am so ready. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to get the first clue on the day it is released...:(

Love the idea of a separate FB page for this quilt. Anyone else doing FB for this project?

Looking sooooo forward to starting!

Well, count me in. Finished Celtic Solstice back in May. Looking forward to this one. Bonnie says that it isn't as complex as CS, so it sounds like fun. Here are my fabrics. The blues lean a little toward aqua, with some teal, but I think I have plenty of variety. I'll probably be using a single neutral, as I have quite a bit of yardage in neutral. Counting down... 11 days to go!

How did you find the FB page? I looked on her blog but couldn't find anything about it.

JeanieG 11-18-2014 07:30 PM

Here is Bonnie's Facebook Page. It is called Quiltville's Open Studio. There is a lot of chatter there about Grand Illusion.

Beautiful fabrics, bennie! It will be so fun to see everyone's quilt. Even though many are the same palette, they will all have different personalities!
