DottieD thanks for the link for the YouTube video. I watched it and will try it for the next "Y" pattern.

Joe's Mom, when my blocks come out a smidge smaller I just add a border around it to make it the right size.

BethA, thank you for that helpful hint!

I'm embarrassed to show my G-8 Poinsettia block -- it's so uneven! (And I probably should have fussy-cut the corner pieces for consistency; this may be a re-do down the line). I did not find the 'Y' seam to be too dreadful, thanks to that tutorial. Next on the 'never done' list is paper piecing!

This block shows an issue I'm concerned about -- my darks are super dark and I'm afraid they will give the blocks an unbalanced look. The greens in this fabric line are unusually muted, and I was unable to find any outside greens that harmonized with them.

Joe's Mom, your G-8 block looks just fine and I wouldn't worry about the colors right now. I think this block will blend in with the others as you go along. Good job on those Y seams!

This month, we seem to have a lot of paper pieced blocks, and I am out of papers for paper piecing. I like Carol Doak's papers that I can run through my printer. Does anyone in the US have any others to recommend?

QuiltingVagabond 05-15-2021 03:56 AM

Mkotch, I bought a ream of newsprint from Amazon. Standard paper size - works great! I love paper piecing, it's very zen for me.

toverly 05-15-2021 06:12 AM

Joe'smom, these tiny blocks have a tendency to do that. I've started looking at the blocks and determining beforehand which side of the blocks go out. If I can leave that side untrimmed, I do. So at the end I go back and cut down to the finished size. It can't always be done, but it sure helps me.

QuiltingVagabond 05-16-2021 05:17 AM

I made the Christmas Eve block Friday night and plan to work on some of the May blocks today. Yesterday my daughter and I went shopping to celebrate her birthday and get some girl time together. So I am starting the day slowly, shopping was hard on me!

Here are my May blocks.

Does anyone know of a program where we can add pictures of our finished blocks in the order they need to go?? I dont want to put the same fabric next to another block. Does that make sense??

toverly 05-18-2021 11:00 AM

BethA, I made a simple 10 x 10 grid on poster board. Each block is 2x2. I put a scrap of fabric on each square as I make the blocks. It sure helps create balance. I think, we will see at the end.

DottyD 05-18-2021 11:03 AM

Great blocks BethA x

Dotty, I confess that I re-did my poinsettia block and I feel so much better about it, LOL.

QuiltingVagabond, your May blocks are wonderful; they are a feast for the eyes.

BethA, your blocks look great. I was also concerned about color placement, so I took toverly's suggestion and made a board, and planned all the blocks out ahead of time, like so:

BethA 05-18-2021 01:30 PM

Great idea, thanks.

Beth, love your blocks, I've been trying to figure out how to put all my blocks in a grid too, but I'm also not opposed to moving them around for better color placement. I know there is a way to grid photos because I've seen some for Dear Jane blocks. Still looking for that info...

I had one when I was making my my Dear Jane - with thanks to my hubby. He found a programme that Sharon Mastbrook had shared - but she took it down. Several others have asked me over the years and sadly I am unable to help.

My Dear Jane is shown in the link below !

Does anyone have the problem I seem to be having ?
Every time I come out of QB - even for just a short time - I have to Log in again, even though I tick the "Remember Me " box. Is this the normal circumstance !

I am off to my next block now !!

I know Dear Jane has a program to place photos. I have seen it also. My tech guy, my son, says it might be able to be done in Excel. Haven't tested that one. You could always do the same with the grid, just move the finished block photos around instead of the fabrics.

I have had that happen from time to time, but not recently. I'm trying to remember if did something to fix it or if it just stopped happening on its own.

I used an Excel spreadsheet for my Sylvia's Bridal Sampler and it worked good enough for me... Here it is... I'm not using one for Harriet since I am following in order of rows and assembling as I go...

Here are my latest blocks. I'm not using a grid or anything to organize them. I usually just move them constantly until I think they look good. I have been thinking about quilting in sections, though, so I may very well change my mind (not unusual either!).

Really great colors! Marianne. Love the addition of black among them. Good job.

Great Job Marianne on your blocks, they are beautiful.

I am working on finishing up my Syvlias Bridal Sampler. I have the first the first half done. See attached. Do I need to add a border?? I think I might. Any ideas on color of border??

toverly 05-20-2021 12:17 PM

Those are awesome, BethA. Are they 6 1/2 also or larger? I have looked at that book but can't remember. I would border in my favorite color. I have heard and tend to agree, whatever color the border is, that's the colors that pop in the quilt. So what is your favorite color?

joe'smom 05-20-2021 01:23 PM

BethA, that looks amazing! I'd say 'yes' to a border, but not sure about what color.

Here are my I-3 and I-10. I'm now through the first month of blocks, yippee!

The paper piecing -- wow! That's a lot of work. I can see why people like it, as it is pretty foolproof and results in such a neat block. I can also see where some people would be opposed because of the waste of fabric. I'm happy that it's now no longer a mystery to me.

Mkotch 05-22-2021 01:32 AM

Nice blocks, Joe's Mom! I know what you mean about paper piecing. It does seem like a waste of fabric, but you can use some of the larger little bits in "crumb" quilts if you like. I just throw them away as I have far too many scraps anyway. But with these little blocks, it is often the best technique. It used to be my least favorite technique, but now I guess fusible applique (which may be the best technique for some of the HJ blocks) is. Guess I'll try tackling that soon.

I have posted my progress for a while but I have been making blocks. I try to do the 8 per month but they that include the setting blocks. Am sure enjoying seeing the progress that the rest of you have been making. This will not be the final lay out of the colored blocks. As I add more, I keep switching the blocks around. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

toverly 05-22-2021 11:41 AM

Love it WMUTeach, I am thinking of presashing also. Your's looks great!

joe'smom 05-22-2021 01:30 PM

WMUTeach, that's a great shade of red you've chosen for the sashing. It's looking wonderful.

Bummer, I woke up this morning thinking it was "our Saturday". I'm off a bit. Have a great weekend everyone!

QuiltingVagabond 05-29-2021 08:31 AM

toverly, go ahead and make a block or a few... no reason not to if you are in the mood. When that one comes up, you are good to go LOL
I did play with Excel for my DJ blocks, it works but is a slow process for me. I'll have to ask my grandson if there are shortcuts to making it less laborious.
