Harriet's Journey BOM
Would you like to join me in making the blocks from Jennifer Chiaverini's new quilt book called Harriet's Journey ? I hope this is allowed for me to post this here ?
I live in the UK and love making Sampler quilts. I have already made Sylvia's Bridal Sampler and The Loyal Union Sampler and also Dear Jane by Brenda Papadakis. You will need to buy the book to be able to join in and participants are not permitted to share copies of the book's contents, there will be no patterns given and there is no sign-up required, but I would love to hear from you if you are interested. A schedule still has to be worked out if there is going to be one! This is open for discussion, would you like more than one block a month ? Do you want an assignment or pick your own block or blocks. Here you can ask questions, share tips and share photos of your blocks. I look forward to starting this journey with you ! |
I'm up for a block of the month, although it will take us a long time to make this quilt if we only make one block a month! Maybe two or three blocks? We could maybe "assign" one block the same and make the other two or three "maker's choice"? I will be making mine scrappy but some may need some time to figure out what style, colors, etc. Whatever the group decides is fine with me!
|
DottyD, I would love to join in. I agree with having a schedule of blocks to do each month. It helps me keep working toward a goal. I do not have the book yet but I bookmarked it on Amazon a couple of weeks ago. I will suscribe to this thread so I can keep up with the conversation and participate after I get the book and I get my colors chosen. I may treat myself and acturally pick out civil war reproduction prints from a local quilt shop. Of course it will appears scrappy which would fit the style of quilt, but the fabrics would be chosen rather than "just what is in my stash". I have been stash diving for14 months now and it would feel so goo to wander a quilt shop and pick out something new that I like. (Yes, my stash has been shrinking and I will continue to shrink it for the next year too! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png)
Even if we are a small group, it is always encouraging to see what others are making and quilting. |
DottyD, this sounds fun! I’d love to join in. Will we post a schedule of block to make each month? I am purchasing the book, so I’ll have the patterns. Just wondering how we will keep tabs on the progress? Do we share a picture of our block each month?

Hi Mkotch and WMUTeach, how nice to hear from you both ! That just adds to my excitement in starting this new project with like minded friends ! I have subscribed to this group ( I have NEVER done anything like this before so please tell me if I need to rectify anything ? ) To give you time to get the book and sort out your fabrics shall we start next month ? I thought perhaps if I give you 4 blocks a month and do that on the 2nd Saturday of each month with the first one on the 13th March.
I am making mine with Moda fabrics in Reds, Blues and Creams in a Winter theme ! I do hope others will join us and subscribe to the thread and in the meantime take care and happy hunting for your fabrics !! |
Hi Abbenirmal, Lovely to hear from you and glad you can join us ! I have written out the details in above post - so do let me know if you have any other questions ? Oh yes I do hope we can post photos of the completed blocks to share.
|
Way to go DottyD! I am in, in, in. This will be great. Your start date sounds good. I'm going to work in my batiks again, since that is what I have the most. But lately I've been mixing it all together so I never know what I'll end up with. It's so funny how if I stick to colors I like, it all works.
|
Looks interesting - I'm also getting a bit tired of all the "scrappy" I've been dealing with, and I've wanted to do a sampler using only a few colors (but lots of shades) so maybe this could be it.
|
Hi Toverly and Macybaby - fabulous news that you are wanting to join us - I am working on the planning !! x

Harriet's journey BOM
I would think doing 1 a week would be a good idea. Otherwise this will take several years to complete. I can promise that many will loose interest at that rate. They are small blocks and if there is some alternating between the easier and harder ones should keep people interested. Even at 1 a week - will take 2 years. I could be up for 2 a week as well. I am on the fence about assigning blocks because sometimes that is good and keeps us progressing and keeps people from by-passing the more difficult ones. Linda in Denver
|
Hi Linda, I totally agree with your comments and perhaps would say I will assign one block each week and an open invitation for anyone to make further blocks of their choice if they wish ! Please can I have everyone's thoughts ?
|
I am a huge fan of Jennifer Chiaverini so I had to go check out the book & got sucked in the rabbit hole at amazon lol I love to read as much as I love to sew. I am on the fence about joining, every time I do commit life has a way of getting in the way lol

Dotty, I believe you will need to ask PatriceJ if you have the correct Forum for your group. She might want the thread in the 'Challenges' Forum. When I originally found the 'Old School Block of the Month' here, it was moved from this thread to the other thread. I'm not quite sure why BOMs and BOWs are in the Challenge Forum....
|
Thank you very much givio - how do I contact Patrice please to ask her ?
|
I am interested in a sew a long as well. Mkotch told me about this thread-so I have registered to follow along. I have the book, but have not thought about fabrics for the quilt yet. I wonder if it would look good in solids....

Sounds great DottyD! I think a block a week is a pretty good schedule. They are small and shouldn't take too long to complete, or to catch up.

I'm confused about this too. SusieQ had posted a Riley Blake BOM in another forum then I put it here but a moderator moved it to the links section. I don't know why so I would like clarification about this. I replied to the PM I got but haven't heard back yet. if I hear anything I'll post it.

Thanks again for organizing this, Dotty. I'm looking forward to it, wherever we land. March 13 sounds like a good start date to me. I think I have identified some background fabric and then I will dip into my stash for the rest. I may not be able to keep up with the group, but I'll give it a whirl. I have a lot of projects I'm trying to work on this year.

on the fence about getting the kindle version or hard copy. I bought SBS digital version, and it came with a link to download all the templates and that worked well. Only problem was that the settings on my tablet need to be adjusted so it stops going to sleep after 5mn of not touching it.
I'd prefer several blocks a week. In looking at them, they don't seem too hard. When I did the 365block challenge that was a block a day, and that did get to be a bit much to keep up on. I normally tried to do the 7 for the week on the weekend. I might be kind of weird, but I really like doing several blocks at one time. I cut them all and then sew what I can until I need to press for each block, then press them and trim, and then go to the next round. |
Assigning 1 block a week and inviting everyone to do more sounds perfect to me. I know that as we progress more
and more people will have already done the assigned block, but they should be able to choose a couple more. I'm going to set up a spreadsheet for myself, so I can keep track of the blocks I have done. Linda |

I have made my first block and would like to share a photo of it with you ! A1 - Air Castle and I am quite pleased with it. I wish to be completely honest with you in that am not a lover of Applique and I will make different blocks in their place. I will still assign those blocks though for those of you happy to make them. Forgive me !!

Anxiously waiting for my book. "Out for delivery by 9PM." If the blocks are labeled, A1 etc. We can either do them by number or location. Do whatever you think it best. I'm all in. Found my neutral and I'm pulling brights. I'll use the colors in the blocks for color placement on the competed top. As luck would have it, it was in the Amazon warehouse in the next state.

Yeah! My book arrived. I think I'm heading to Office Depot to get it spiral bound. It will lay flat then. Looks like fun.

What a good idea, having your book spiral bound! I have a piece of gorgeous fabric from Williamsburg, Virginia that may be my my starting point for colors etc. As soon as my book arrives I will make color choices.
Just ordered my book and it should be here on Saturday! Yeah! Then off to Office Depot. |

Hi, Dotty!! I loved making Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler and I’m thinking about doing this one, too.... I’ll have to look at my stash and see if anything inspires me to commit to this. Either way, I’ll be watching the creations of others...

Wow! Two blocks a week! I know that will be too much for me, but I will do what I can. I have white on white background fabric set aside now but will most likely need to get a little more eventually. I'm planning to use some of my favorite colors - turquoise, lime, purple, pink - mostly from stash, I hope.
|
Another option is to give two blocks a week, and then occasionally have a "catch up" week if several participants are getting behind. These 6" blocks can go very fast, so it might seem scary but I think once you get into it, most are going to find it's not too hard. And if you are using a constant background or theme of fabric, cutting more than one at a time might be a time saver.
It would be different if we had a lot of applique or paper pieced blocks. When I did Affairs of the Heart, one 6" applique block took me about 10 hours of hand stitching, and when doing the 50 PP stars, each star was made of 8 pp sections sewn together, and that was also a lot more work. |
I like the idea of a planned OFF week to catch up as per MacyBaby's post #39. Only a 6" block is easy to roll off our lips but I bet that most of us have more than one quilting effort going on. When I stop to think about my own, I know of at least three and this would make four as well as trying to clear UFOs. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png I can spell "over commitment" but I still want to participate and make this quilt with the encouragement of other quilters. A little peer accountability is a good motivator.
