Orphaned quilter up for adoption! Ok, so I'm not orphaned per se, but my older sister who was teaching me all sorts of sewing moved form here in NY all the way to Tacoma Washington. Boo. I even wash windows! I am making some progress on getting the tops to come together quite well, but the sides, binging and backing scare me. And I have NO IDEA how to actually quilt it. I'm trying to convince my hubby that I need to biy one of those big bad boys that does all the quilting for me at the touch of a button!

Thank you, as soon as my head quits spinning, I will make a list and start working on it. Funds are very limited. We are a non-profit. I will be asking for donations to get us started. I think the general public will respond kindly and help us out. I can also approach fabric stores for some donations. But it is nice to have a list to show them.

Psychomomquilter 06-21-2010 09:59 AM

Yes! ME!!!

Psychomomquilter 06-21-2010 10:00 AM

I also am up for adoption

fleurdelisquilts.com 06-21-2010 08:03 PM

I'll adopt someone. I can help you with the basics and encourage you, and even define a few techniques--but you'll have to translate much of the texting jargon.....I'm an English teacher in my other life, and we NEVER use abbreviations and such when writing. (There's a separate rule for English majors.) I have no idea how many quilts I've made, but I will confess that I'm addicted.

Psychomomquilter 06-22-2010 03:36 AM

This is all new to me, I am a crocheter, but I want t6o do something different! make quilts and do them right. This is one reason why I am on this board.
so any help is appreciated. and I am up for adoption as well.

sharie101 06-22-2010 02:09 PM

Hi,
I'm so new to quilting, I squeek! I've been lurking in the background here for about a month, and I've come to a conclusion. You guys are great! You all seem so friendly and helpful. I am a grasshopper in quiltland, please help guide me in my path....

Psychomomquilter 06-22-2010 04:14 PM

Same here!

I agree with the greatness of the people of this board. It's wonderful to have sister quilters to chat with. My mom was a quilter until the Alzheimer's got so bad that she couldn't remember how to sew. We still chatted and she would ask about my my quilts but now the disease is so advanced that she simply has no interest in anything and can barely talk at all. Needless to say, we don't talk about quilts. I have a great visit if she remembers who my kids and husband are. Speaking of Alzheimer's has anyone made a quilt for the Alzheimer's Project they hold at festival?

Psychomomquilter 06-23-2010 03:21 AM

thanks for that, yes quilts for Alzheimer, as well of other organizations, that would be great!

ohioquilter 06-23-2010 08:41 PM

boy, I wish I would have found something like this when I first started ten years ago.. I taught myself from books from the library!!!I can adopt someone. I still haven't done curved pieces or inset seam myself, but the rest I am good at.
I piece my blocks on my machine, but then I hand quilt everything I do. If I an me of help, personal message(PM) me and we can exchange some info.

laurac 06-24-2010 05:15 AM

i'm anewbie. i don't think i'd be much fun to adopt right now though. i'm pretty distracted with a brand new grandbaby. he's 4 days old and i'm at their house helping get things of to a good start. then when i go home, i'll have my parents, in poor health, and my son's family, still looking for a house, sharing my house and time. oh, then there's work...
i do have a question and you guys say no questions are stupid...i downloaded some free stencil designs, i've got a chalk pencil, now how do i get the design to the quilt top?

Quilt Mom 06-24-2010 11:45 AM

Laurac,

I am guessing the stencil you have downloaded is printed on paper. If it is dark enough to see through the fabric, lay the fabric on top and trace with your chalk pancil. A light box may help, but I have found that I don't always need one.

Hope this helps. If not, send me a pm, and we can go into a little more detail on your question.

fleurdelisquilts.com 06-24-2010 02:25 PM

I saw a great idea on a quilt show, though can't remember which one. Start with white tulle and something to attach it to. I've used a picture mat and duct taped the tulle to it, but now I use an embroidery hoop cause it's easier and faster, but you have to use the hoop upside down so the tulle lays flat on the stencil. Trace the design onto the tulle with a permanent marker (you can see through the holes in the tulle). Then put the tulle, still attached to mat or hoop, onto the quilt and follow the lines using your chalk pencil. The chalk rubs through the holes and makes an unbroken line for a pattern. Tulle is cheap and you can reuse it. I store mine folded in a plastic sleeve and keep them in a binder. I put the original paper pattern on top the tulle in the sleeve so that I can easily find the pattern I want. It's a pretty good system.

so clever!

I would love to adopt a newbie. I am in South Texas and have been quilting for over 10 years.

I love piecing, free motion quilting, wholecloth. Not much into applique or paper piecing. So if someone interested please PM.
Jackie ;)

I am a "newbie" and would love to be adopted. I have been sewing for as long as I can remember. Bought a new machine last fall-Janome 9700 (?)Love it. Still learning how to use it. I am doing pretty good with the piecing end of it. It is the quilting I am scared to try the stiching variations. I have done the boring straight stiches. I have made 2 large quilts otherwise baby quilts and only tied them with yarn like grama showed me. Haven't tried hand quilting but my GF keeps telling me to try it. This weekend I was planning on buying a hoop to do a small project first. After seeing my first quilt for my nieces wedding present, my sisters all ordered one too. I have a lot to do.

im a newbie would love to be adopted but i come from scotland

simplecomforts 06-27-2010 11:05 AM

I'm a toddler who has the idea and I have made quilts. But still would like a mommy to have my questions answered. And help me if I fall down. I need a kind mommy with patience. I would like to learn how to do a dresden quilt. I have a pattern and the material. But can't seem to get started. I also would like to learn how to paper piece and applique.

cimarron 06-27-2010 07:38 PM

Did someone say they were interested in Dresden pattern? I've never even considered making one...But I did notice John Flynn's custom lazer cut patterns showed they HAD a kit, whether they still do I don't know. ANYwho...just think it looks precision type cutting so almost considered one of those kits. Any sage advise on "how to" would be GREATLY appreciated. I bought a bunch of Windham Fabrics' Williamsburg & Historical Conn (12 - assorted) this weekend online. It will be for my mother. I was actually considering Dresden patten. It looks so hard though. Working on Flynn's Double Wedding Rings before the big redo, but when finished want to get back to the Wedding Rings project. This is my first Wedding Rings project. Never thought I could do it. His book is awesome. Rings are actually round!!! ; - D

A lot of the help is in the form of tutorials and PMs, so you could be adopted by someone anywhere in the world!

I'll help if I can. With what are you needing help?

I know this trick too. Suggestion...after tracing the pattern onto the tule with a permanent marker, iron the tule to set the ink so it doesn't come off on the fabric. I then save my tule to reuse the same pattern again later.

Instead of chalk (which can gum up your machine if you machine quilt), Crayola has new washable fine tip pens. I used them on my last quilt and they washed out great. Used cold water even though it said to use hot/warm. They come in the 8 major Crayola colors too! Great for dark and light colored fabric. I found mine at Joanne's but I recently saw them at Walmart in the office/school supplies aisle.

Hi out there. Does anyone on the list live in Alaska?

I am a newbie and up for adoption. I am going to make my son a throw using animal print flannel 6inch squares. I have never worked with flannel, any suggestions on the best way to mark the material. He will be helping to cut out the squares.

dawson.tracy35 06-30-2010 01:10 PM

I am up for adoption as well! Anyone feel free to adopt me and teach me, please!!!!! I have my first quilt squares done and ready to do the sashing for them to finish the quilt top. I know when I get to binding I will have a bazillion questions!

quiltandcrochetGMA 06-30-2010 03:36 PM

Hello everyone: I just joined this group and wanted to know if anyone had any advice on double wedding ring quilts. I am making one for my granddaughter and am paper piecing the arcs. It is scrappy and have hundreds of different fabrics from charm packs. I finally came up with the idea that the arcs, themselves, will be appliqued onto the background because I could not make all those meeting points work. Any ideas on "piecing" the background as I do not want to deal with the entire quilt (queen size) in one unit as I am hand appliquing the arcs to the background? I have some ideas, but maybe an experienced quilter could help?

cimarron 06-30-2010 09:57 PM

Dear quiltandcrochetGMA: Honestly, I've been SO pleased with John Flynn's method of doing the Double Wedding rings I'd have recommended, but sounds like you have a gorgeous project well underway... His method is SO easy, and turns out PERFECT circles quickly. It's strip pieced...then cut the width of the arc, then go back and widen seam allowance to fit the arc to the stencil, etc. EVERY part has perfect stencils. It is very precise. I LOVE IT! Just passing along the info in case it might be useful. IF you have cut the pieces already, you might still enjoy using the stencils, to be sure the angle and pieces perfectly fit??

That is the true spirit of a quilter! The teach someone else what you know! I have been quilting for a long time, but, no , I do not know it all. I love to hand quilt, I know nothing of machine quilting. I make bias cut binding for all my quilts (it's easy, really). I do needle turn applique', and hand embroidery. I can paper peice....my point is...I would love to help a newbie ( and yes, some newbies have been at for a while...it;s ok :P )

BeaSewHappy 07-01-2010 01:21 PM

UMMMM???!!! I'm a Newbie to this board but to quilting? NO! I've been stitching, quilting, sewing, knitting, crochet, lacing, bobbin lacing, and any other type of needle craft since I was a kid. Well over 25 odd years... so which group do I belong in. Also I long-arm quilt for quilters who piece during the winter months and want it quilted in time to put into the state fairs. So really not sure where I belong on this one. I'm a veteran but not to this board. I hope to make many friends here. Actually looking for a few things for my 1953 Singer sewing machine. It has a speciality disc that goes into the top and I am looking to buy them, if of course I can find them.

I am a newbie as well, and would LOVE to be mentored, encouraged, disciplined in all things fun and quiltable.. I hope someone would enjoy answering questions, teaching, sharing insights and patterns with someone like me , that is always trying to take quilting out of the box, so to speak, and making it my own ..
