Splendid Sampler 2

1 Attachment(s)
I thought it would be nice for anyone taking part in Splendid Sampler 2 to share blocks each week so we can see what people are up to and to keep each other motivated. I will be using Batiks and white fabric for my blocks. Here is my block 1 of 100. Anyone else want to share theirs?

Barb in Louisiana 06-17-2018 09:51 AM

That's a pretty block. I look forward to seeing your progress.

Maggie_Sue 06-17-2018 11:32 AM

OMG that is beautiful!!! Love the colors!!!

osewme 06-17-2018 12:07 PM

That's a beautiful block. I'm not participating but will look forward to seeing yours as you progress. Is it a new block every month?

NZquilter 06-17-2018 12:20 PM

I'm downloading the blocks and hope to buy the book once it comes out. Maybe I'll find time to make the blocks too. Only one a week isn't too much :D. (As if I need another quilt in the works right now!)

quiltsRfun 06-17-2018 12:51 PM

Nice work! Love the colors. I'll be following along but won't be able to join. Too many other projects I'm working on.

It is one per week but they are only 6” blocks. There will be 100 total if I make it that far.... This time they are doing the first 20 for free and then you can order the book and continue with them or work at your own pace.

osewme 06-17-2018 01:16 PM

Thanks for the info on the blocks. I'll try to download the first 20 free ones also. I really like the looks of that first block. I've never seen any block like that before. Here's the site where you do go download the free block each week. Just click on the wreath that they have put around the designer for the free block & then download the block.

Made mine yesterday. Looks nice. I'm wondering what people are doing with the stuff they cut off. I saved some of the bigger pieces for a future block.

SusieQOH 06-18-2018 02:45 AM

Your colors are gorgeous!!!!!!! I'm not familiar with this but love what I see.

bneuen 06-18-2018 05:15 AM

Nice block. Love the colors.

cindyb 06-18-2018 05:50 AM

I did this for the original Splendid Sampler. We had a group of about 10 that met at 8am every Wed to do our little show and tell and tips that made it easier or whined about not liking something LOL. It was A LOT OF FUN. I think 8 of us finished it to the end. We continue to meet weekly just talking about our various projects, but most of them are burned out from the first one. But, it's continuing to peak my interest. I may do it on my own along with you guys.

I'm clicking on the two wreaths shown, but nothing happens.

Scroll down to where the designers are pictured. There is a wreath around the featured designer for the first block. Click on his image to get the pattern

Macybaby 06-18-2018 09:25 AM

If you go to the Home Page, scroll down quite a ways and you will find a link to Download the block

Why don't you post a picture? I'd love to see it.

I could see there was going to be a lot of waste so I cut my pieces a lot smaller to begin with so I didn't have as much waste

KalamaQuilts 06-18-2018 12:39 PM

finally found it via the home page, thanks Macy. I was totally surprised to see it is basically a braid quilt in a small block :) I was sure it would be paper pieced. Sure is cute, thanks for sharing ladies.

edited to add: how refreshing to be one page to print!

I signed up to participate, have not been able to choose or make up my mind which to use. Civil war, batiks or Christmas???? They have a great Facebook page. Enjoy the trip.

Cindy I was torn between Christmas or Batiks as well. Decided to opt for Batiks so that I can still do other Christmas projects. I love Christmas haha.

joe'smom 06-20-2018 06:34 AM

Sometimes I think I should get an award for cluelessness. I finally saw where the wreath is in the group of designer photos. Thanks everyone who came to my rescue! It's such a good idea to offer 20 free blocks -- everyone will get hooked and buy the book!

Macybaby 06-21-2018 04:00 AM

here is my first block. I'm going to work on using up my current year's scraps.

I don’t know if it isn’t just me on my iPad but I can’t see your pic macybaby.
Kalama thanks for posting today’s block up - I was coming on to do it. I am looking forward to making it this week

Macybaby 06-21-2018 01:24 PM

RJL, I use photo bucket for hosting, and sometimes they are having aproblem and pictures are temporarily unavailable.

I'm not sure if I want to try the applique using needle turn or machine. I think I got turned off on Needle Turn applique when I was doing the Affairs of the Heart. I only completed 12 blocks and then was so sick of it I couldn't get motivated to do any more. I was satisfied with my ability, it just seemed so tedious and time consuming.

RJLinkletter 06-21-2018 09:33 PM

That’s annoying MB as there is still no pic! I haven’t decided yet either. I do a lot of hand sewing so I’m sure I could do needle turn - it just hasn’t appealed so have never tried it. Lots of the needle turn methods seem to use freezer paper which we don’t get over here. We have to buy an imported box which is about £10 - anothervthing that has put me off. I will do mine over the wkend - probably on Saturday.

Macybaby 06-22-2018 05:18 AM

I think I'm going to use paper piecing for the pieced ring, and then use the appliquick method to turn under the seam allowance and then hand stitch it on. And maybe try the tin foil method to make the inner circle. Will be fun to try some new methods and see how it works.

I don't think I've used freezer paper for any applique so far.

Macybaby 06-22-2018 03:00 PM

here is my second block. Still don't much care for hand applique.

Here is my second block. I used EPP and then machined down whole unit. This weeks block was ok but I preferred making last week’s.

bcsews 06-24-2018 04:49 AM

It took me awhile to find where this thread had gone to. Lol. I am participating in this block of the week. I am using a collection of Thimbleberries fabrics I had leftover from my farmers wife quilt. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s blocks. I am having trouble attaching my pictures. I will try to get that figured out and post them.

RJLinkletter 06-24-2018 06:14 AM

Bcsews they look great!

Macybaby 06-24-2018 10:17 AM

bcsews- those turned out really nice! I'm not real happy with the colors in mine, but I'm going to stick with scraps. And when the blocks are done, I can move them around until I like what I've got. If I end up with something that really sticks out, I'll redo it at that time.

RJLinkletter 06-28-2018 08:34 AM

Block 3 is out today ladies! Not sure what I think of the clamshell look yet. I was hopeful my for some FPP today but maybe next week...

My 1st two I have a box of Cotton and Steel random Fatquarters. Using them so this quilt will be a surprise tome too. Will see if the FQ will make it thru the whole quilt.

dotcomdtcm 06-29-2018 07:34 AM

I made 4 wall hangings from the first book, changing colors when I got bored. I surprised myself by accomplishing some of the really tricky ones! I'm doing these in black and white w some color. However the 3rd block screams to me to be a small wall hanging. I've never done clamshells, but I think of it as close to EPP. Posting photos is a pain, especially since I now use my Iphone. Thanks to you who do show your work.

RJLinkletter 06-29-2018 12:20 PM

I love the centre of your block 2 giquilt.

Dotcomdtcm I know it is difficult to post from iphone sometimes (I post mine from iPhone) but it would be great to see a pic of several of your blocks together maybe?

giquilt 06-29-2018 09:04 PM

Rjlinkletter,
hello from Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Since I’m using a Mystery box of several lines from Cotton & Steel I have been delighted to find some cute prints. This particular one was a little bigger than the original circle, but I wanted to get the full effect of the view finder. I remember playing with one as a child. As we did not have TV, it was a wonderful, magical toy.

Loving everyone’s blocks.

Here is my block 3. I’m not massively pleased with it and think it will end up being a redo as I started my clamshells too high up. I might be able to fiddle with the seam allowances though when joining so we shall see.

RJLinkletter 07-05-2018 09:44 PM

What do you think of this week’s block? I’m disappointed it is another appliqué. I also think it is a bit child like so I am probably going to do an alternative block instead.
