Tomato Sauce for pasta and pizza. I will never buy bottle sauce again.
I was recently given this recipe and was told it was top secret. So don't tell anyone. LOL Use it for spaghetti, lasagna, pizza, any recipe that calls for tomato sauce. My DH said it was the best and my grands lick the bowl when I put it on spaghetti and before they wouldn't touch a tomato. They are 4 and 6.
1 large can whole peeled tomatoes with liquid. Whole tomatoes are better tasting.
1 peeled medium onion cut in half
1 stick of real butter
Simmer all together uncovered for about 45 minutes, mashing tomatoes every so often. I use a potato masher. Remove onion, salt to taste. That's it. Add nothing else.

That is Marcella Hazen's recipe. She was a well-known Italian cook and her books are amazing. She has since passed and her books are sometimes hard to find.
I love that recipe and use it whenever I can.

Did you ever try doing this with your own fresh tomatoes? This sounds like the way my grandmother did it. Of course, that was 60-70 years ago, her tomatoes all came from the garden or the basement, where she had shelves full of her fresh canned vegetables, including, whole tomatoes, tomato juice and tomato sauce (which she made with onion and butter).

My DIL makes it this way and she and my son love it. They are both vegetarian so he no longer eats the sauce I've made his whole life. When they come home I make marinara which we all love but I want to try this one. We're seeing the kids this week and she's going to make it. Sounds really good!
