Matrimonial squares are what many Canadians refer to as date squares. We're Canadians eh!

    Date Nut Bread

2 8oz pkgs dates cut up
    2 c boiling water
    2 c sugar
    c shortening
    2 eggs, beaten
    4 cups sifted flour
    2 tsp. Baking powder
    1 tsp salt
    2 tsp vanilla
    c milk
    1 cup chopped nuts

Pour boiling water over dates. Let set.

Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs and dates and vanilla. Add dry ingredients with milk, add nuts.

Pour into 5 #2 cans which have been greased. Fill 2/3 full.
I use the small size bread pans.

    Bake @ 350 oven about 1 hr 20 min.

Wow! I thought I had a lot of dates but probably not enough to try all these recipes. Thank you so much!! I'm am so anxious to try out so many of these but will have to wait a couple of days...... my DH and I have been doing a remodel job on the cabin and the stove is supposed to be hooked up this week. We had to unhook it and move it to the new kitchen on Saturday. Anyway, you all are great with all these recipes. I'll make sure and report back when I try some.

Use them like raisins. Put them in a cookie.

Wow, I picked up some great recipes from this thread, I have a bunch of dates and have only been using them in oatmeal cookies. I am going to have to try to make Matrimonial Cake.

I make these cranberry caramel bars at Christmas. They are always a big hit. Dates are an important part of the recipe.
