pea soup

Does anyone have a really really good recipe for green split pea soup made with a ham hock? I have been wanting a good old fashioned recipe for this for a while and am never satisfied with want I come up with.

Split peas, carrots, water. Follow the directions on the package of peas. Add ham hocks and cook for flavor. I always add some chicken broth for flavor, If you have a turbo blender after peas are cooked run them through blender for thickness. I always add hambone too.

Hope it works for you - as a matter of fact I have a ham hock and split peas, sounds good for a dinner this week. Thanks for the idea. Edie

This is my mother's recipe. A little different but we love it.
3 quarts of water
1 ham bone (never tried ham hocks but I'm going to)
1 bay leaf
1 onion, 1 carrot, 1 stalk celery- diced
1 lb. split peas
Cook for about 2 hours
Add 2-3 diced potatoes and cook 30 minutes
Add drop dumplings and cook 5 minutes more
Recipe for drop dumplings
6 Tablespoons of flour,1 egg, tiny bit of water to make a thick paste, (consistency should be sticky)
Drop small amounts off of teaspoon into soup.

I also add a little onion and pepper. Otherwise I make it this way exactly. This is the best recipe!
