I just ran to get a piece of paper to write the recipe down (no printer at home) - sounds great for tonight's dinner!

Had some when I was growing up in AZ. It's like a fried flat bread with taco stuff in it from what I remember. Loved them.

For us with high cholesterol, the light bread, but how do we take out all the grease/oil from the hamburger meat, beans, etc.? I rarely eat red meat at all. Guess I could use Chicken???

Indian tacos. YUM!
Take any yeast bread recipe for white OR whole wheat bread. Mix as usual, (not too much flour or you'll have a heavy dough)
After you let the dough rest...heat canola oil in a heavy pan. With floured hands, cut a piece of dough about the size of a small apple and shape it generally round and sort of flat, (I like mine a little fatter) but it will raise once it hits the hot oil. poke or slice a little hole in the center. Fry till golden and carefully turn over. when it's golden brown it's ready.

I use any chili recipe mixed with lots of burger and pinto beans and pour a cupful over the top. (Some use refried beans and cooked seasoned hamburger separately) Then add lettuce, tomatoes, onions, grated cheese, sour cream if desired and hot sauce like Pace.

Fry bread is also good alone or with butter or a little salt. It is high calorie because of the oil but it's a great once in awhile treat.

Frozen bread dough or biscuit dough from a can can be fried also but I personally have never done this. But I've eaten it and it isn't a bad substitute!

Oh my goodness ..Indian Fry bread !! Yummy had that one year when we took the kids when they were little to go to New Mexico to visit. We went to an Indian Pow Wow and had the fry bread and the taco, both of which were delicious. Thanks for the recipe and the memory !
