nativetexan 07-09-2011 12:10 PM

anybody ever make watermelon jelly or jam? I remember my mother cooking a huge pot of watermelon rinds.

dakotamaid 07-09-2011 12:13 PM

my mom in law makes tomato jelly.

MissSandra 07-09-2011 12:16 PM

watermellon rine for pickles, this year I made my own mint jelly YUMMMMMM it turned out minty fruity due to the pectin i'm sure. Most important it was better than in the stores of course i used twice as much mint as needed.

I have a recipe for tomato jelly. Perhaps when our tomatos get ripe i'll try to do some up.

np3 07-09-2011 12:28 PM

I just made 2 batches of strawberry freezer jam, and a batch of peach freezer jam. I love homemade.

pab58 07-09-2011 12:57 PM

My momma and I made Beet Jelly a few times! Sounds wierd, but it was so yummy!!! You use beet juice and add some raspberry jello (the powder, not the completed jello  ). It doesn't even taste like beets!! :D :D

alikat110 07-09-2011 01:36 PM

Yummie. Just working on dear jane blocks!

hobo2000 07-09-2011 01:46 PM

That's one of my favorites, too. Although I haven't made any for quite some time. All this talk about jams and jellies really has my mouth watering. With all due regard to Smuckers and the other jam/jelly makers, store bought just doesn't hold a candle to home canned.

TJB 07-10-2011 04:10 AM

could you post your recipe for the tomato jelly. i am going to have tons of tomatoes this year and would like to try it.
thanks

Never heard of tomato jelly!!!!!!!!!!!!
What does it taste like? Sweet tomatoes? HMMMMMM.

Does anyone have a good chowchow recipe. Sorry, but you mentioned tomatoes. I don't have anything at present to make jelly with. No longer can find plums in south Alabama. I think the wild ones died out a few years ago. Loved the yellow ones that my mom used to make pies with. Yummy!!

valsma 07-10-2011 04:34 AM

Right now nothing, but come Sept. after we go pickin I will be making Hucklberry jam. I will have to use up what is left of my last years crop in the freezer.

Sunflower Girl 07-10-2011 04:53 AM

Already made apricot and strawberry, yummy!!!!!!

huntannette 07-10-2011 05:26 AM

I just finished making jam with the wild strawberries i picked. I usully make blueberry jam, and sauce. Also choke cherry jelly as well as crabapple jelly, oh and rasberry jelly when I can get good rasberries. Oh and peach marmalade!!

Hosta 07-10-2011 06:22 AM

strawberry jam mmmm

Krystyna 07-10-2011 07:00 AM

Golden Habanero Jelly - great on corn muffins and grilled cheese. Done with blueberry jam and compote as well as raspberry-strawberry-chocolate dessert topping. Starting soon on blackberry jam. Then in August off foraging for beach plums for that incredible jam and Asian dipping sauce. Mmmmm! Guess what everyone is getting for Christmas?

Gram22 07-10-2011 07:45 AM

Yesterday made a batch of ginger rhubarb, my DH's favorite. Had already made multiple batches of strawberry rhubarb as well as plain strawberry. Can't wait til the plums and peaches are ripe to add those to the stash! Will also try an onion relish this year. Has anyone a good recipe?

RugosaB 07-10-2011 08:28 AM

On another messageboard I visit, a gal from Great Britain said she made 'beetroot preserves'
I had never heard of such a thing, so goodled it, and there were oodles of hits and images.

(to me therm beetroot is redundant)

How do you store the garlic in olive oil? I'd like to do some for myself and maybe a few jars as gifts. May in Jersey

May in Jersey 07-10-2011 08:57 AM

Have plenty of jam jars but haven't made any in awhile. Used to have a friend that I kept supplied with jams, he always came over with a bag with the empty jars asking for refills and that kept me making more jam. He and his wife moved out of state a few years ago and I haven't receive any new jam requests.

Kind of hot to be making jams right now but if I see a good sale on some fruits I'll put up a few jars. I usually do jams in the Fall, apple butter (love that it's thin and spreads so nicely) and and an apple pear jam that everyone loves. Also make a low sugar apricot pineapple jam but last few times it came out very thick, maybe I should shorten the cooking time. It's great to have rows of jams ready to eat and enjoy or for gifts. A new niece in law told her mother I was her new Aunt Jam, LOL!

talkn58 07-10-2011 09:26 AM

Can you send me the ginger rhubarb recipe???
I like to try the new and different!!
Thanks

gmaybee 07-10-2011 09:51 AM

I've made strawberry jam and black raspberry jelly. My husband and I picked wild black raspberries on the 4th of July. We found a new patch but there was lots of poison ivy we had to walk through. We went ahead and picked, then as soon as we got home walked to the laundry room and all clothes and shoes went in the washer for a hot water wash, and we scrubbed ourselves with Tecnu. Thankfully neither of us broke out. The jelly is very good so it was worth it.

Scissor Queen 07-10-2011 10:35 AM

One year I made something like 16 cases of jams and jellies. I made habanero-peach, raspberry-peach, sweet cherry-raspberry, blackberry-plum, jalapeno, blueberry-rhubarb, cinnamon apple, cinnamon pear, Dr Pepper, Mt Dew, and apricot-red pepper. I think there were some strawberry ones too but I don't remember what I mixed it with. I pretty much don't do single flavor jams and only a very few single flavor jellies.

The blackberry-plum was my favorite. The apricot-red pepper was the very best over cream cheese. The habanero-peach was actually hot and excellent for glazing pork roast.

QuiltMom2 07-10-2011 11:14 AM

Did a batch of currant jam last night!

DJRustic 07-10-2011 11:40 AM

My DH has picked 12 gals of wild blackberries from here on our farm. I have made jam & jam & jam. Made a cobbler & a pie. Froze 10 packages for later. Also made a topping for icecream, oh is it good.
Took neighbor some , his wife doesn't like it. We still have probably 20 to 30 gal out there. He had to go out of town today for 2 weeks & I can't go out, poison ivy & I really get it. Hope we still have some when he comes home. Love this place.

jad1044 07-10-2011 11:44 AM

just finished cherry jam and jelly a few weeks ago - will do grapes next when they ripen - so many, I doubt I can use them all!

decky 07-10-2011 12:16 PM

I just like eating the different jams and jellies and usually get mine at the grocery store. Would rather spend my time sewing than making jams/jellies.

J Carol 07-10-2011 02:55 PM

Grandkids and I just finished Mullberry Jelly and it is wonderful too. They picked the berries and I did the cleaning then they each took turns squeezing them into juice. Then it was back to my turn cooking the juice and placing the jelly into the jars. What a wonderful time had by all.

madamekelly 07-10-2011 03:14 PM

Orange jam(not marmalade)

javin22 07-10-2011 03:16 PM

I usually make Choke cherry and elderberry jelly. But this year, I don't think I will get any berries. We have a bear at the cabin that stripped all the choke cherry trees and who knows if I will have any elderberries.
