Thank you for your recipes. I'm going to try making it in the slow cooker like you Edie (recipe is similar to Quilt Till U Wilt's, minus the potatoes). This sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. And we love barley!

1 or 2 bags of split peas. 1 fresh garlic clove mashed with a knife. 1 carrot pealed and diced. 1 or 2 smoked ham hocks. Cup of diced yellow onion. 1 bay leaf. 2 stalks of celery diced. Add water to bag directions. Bring to boil, then simmer till peas are like dissolved. Remove ham hocks and take off fat and bone, dice meat add to soup. This soup will thicken over night its awesome.

I use the ham hock too, but I also add bite size pieces of ham leftovers from a cooked ham. Another little secret my Mother did was add a capful of liquid smoke to the pot.

mmmmm sounds good about now! And I have all the ingredients to make it! A good cold winter day is coming so I may just break out the bag of peas. I'm the only one who likes them but I deserve special dishes too!
|
I also add a little Liquid Smoke to the pot.

My family and neighbors loves my pea soup...but I won't touch it....
water to cover the bone Ham bone with leftover ham left on 1 bag of green split peas bag of carrots celery, onion, potatoes 1 bay leaf a little salt Put peas and bone into the pot with bayleaf and salt/pepper. Cook about 48 min. add the veggies... When meat is falling off the bone...remove bone and meat...chop ham and remove the rest from bone. Remove bay leaf... Add ham back into the pot and cook till veggies are tender... |
I make mine the same as I make bean soup only with the dried split peas instead. I have never tried putting potatoe in it. Will have to try it sometime.

My mom made the best split pea soup. She waited till we had ham and then she used the left over bone with some ham left on it. She would put the hame bone in a dutch oven and add diced onion, garlic, salt&pepper, and dried split peas. (2 small or 1 larger bag)cover with water and let simmer about 1 to 2 hrs. Remove the bone and let cool, remove meat from bone and dice up. add back to soup and simmer till peas dissolve and soup thickens. Very yummy with grilled cheese on a cold evening! (I have made it with bacon ends also)
