You're right, I realize there was no can mentioned. Hmmmm. Maybe I just knew to boil that in the can because the O'Charley's waiter had told me. There are also recipes online about it.

This Yummy substance is the base for the glorious Butterscotch pie served at O'Charley's. I tried it and was scared to death the can would explode, but all was well.

I'm confused, Jan. No mention of a can here, except the evaporated milk would come in one. But the pie sounds fantastic!

Well, in my Grammie fatigue, I guess I can't even keep a simple recipe straight. (Little Quinn is having a bad tummy day, perhaps related to his first vaccinations). I Promise you I made this pie with canned sweetened Coindensed milk -- not evaporates -- and I did boil it in the can as others have advised.
I guess until I finally get home in February (please God) no one should rely on anything I say! (I am so tired most of the time, all I can do is feed little Quinn and rock him to sleep. I get up at 4a.m. for the bottle, and again at 8a.m. I try to hold him for an hour long+ nap in the afternoon so Mommy can get some sleep as she does not sleep deeply at night with him at bedside making his little noises all night. Her anxiety will not allow her to put him in his own room and, as he is still having the occasional silent reflux filling his mouth and nose, I can understand her panic.)

This is the way my grandmother made it' Think the reason they do it differently now is because they're afraid it will blow up but, I never really heard of that happening and she made it that way too many times to count with great carmel each time and no "blow up"

You can make it in the microwave.
There are many recipes

Hi everyone! We have an old family recipe where we boil the sweetened condensed milk in water for 4 hours. One day I went upstairs for something and BOOM! Yep the can blew up and trust me, you do not ever want that to happen. I was scrubbing carmel off the ceiling and everything else for months. It went everywhere.
Believe it or not I still do make it, funny how my MIL always said 4 hours, so that's what I do. This is what we do.
LeRoy's Pie
Boil Sweetened Condensed milk for 4 hours. Let cool.
Bake a pie crust. Put 2 sliced bananas in the pie crust and then take the carmel out of the can and put on top.
That's it! Enjoy!
The bananas make the carmel not so sweet and is just a perfect combination.
