I remember chicken fried by my grandmother had a deep orange red and very crispy crust and not greasy. I can't get that crust on chicken now using the same ingredients she used.

Another reason that many products taste differently is because the manufacturers aren't allowed to add any artificial flavors any longer. Soon the colors will also be limited. This won't change the taste, but it will affect the way things look.

I am wondering if the recipies change when the original maker is sold or if it is purchased by a large corporation. It often appears that large companies are more interested in the brand recognition and the profit that can be made on a well loved and popular product. To them minor changes or using lesser ingredients don't matter as much as to the orginal maker.

Someone made comment that younger users won't know the difference. I agree. We may be in the "don't know what you've got till it's gone category".

Onebyone, I thought of you the other day. Awhile ago you mentioned not finding those chocolate Teddy Grahams and I saw them at Giant Eagle. I was surprised as well as I hadn't seen them in ages.
I don't know about vanilla wafers but I used to love Zesta saltines. They are hard to find these days and they've changed the recipe and they're awful!!!

I found the chocolate graham big squares! I like to put Cool Whip between them and freeze. It's weight watchers ice cream sandwich.

If you notice on the package, they aren't called "Vanilla Wafers" anymore. Now they're "'Nilla Wafers." I used to love those as a kid and could eat a whole box in one sitting and then go out to play for a couple of hours.

I think this happens often. I've gotten to where when I know a company is sold, I stock up on their products that I use if they will store well. New owners often weed out less profitable products and only keep things they make a lot on (or can change to make a lot) and try to pass them off as the old products. When Ellen bought Halo pet products I stocked up on a couple of things I used and, sure enough, they were discontinued after about 6 months. All they seem to want to sell is overpriced and not that nourishing dog and cat food. They have discontinued their healing salve (which was awesome) and their flea dip which I made into a spray. It's a great bug repellent spray without chemicals.
