Maybe first wet it with a spray bottle of water and then put in dryer. Most of the loose threads will come out. Then wash the quilt in the washer.

My guild made a lot of these, I don't remember any problems sewing them. I think I sewed with fabric on top. I used the grid type grip. Some now seem to be more solid than open grid.
