At first glance I was sure that it was a Dresden Plate (without the folded ends to create the points), but after looking at it a little more it does look like an "un-kaleidoscoped" kaleidoscope...

Welcome from Germany/Kansas. I would suggest a Disappearing Nine Patch. There's TONS of tutorials, it works up quick and is VERY simple. I can usually work one up in an evening if it's for a child....
