Don't rule out strips. My first die was a 2.5 inch strip that I use every time I want a binding. Fabulous. I also have a lot more but hardly ever use anything but squares and strips. I am with you on the applique dies.

I use the applique, geometric shapes and alphabet shape dies to cut felt pieces for the felt board for the grands felt board, their preschool, children's library, VBS, etc. The felt is cheap and makes a great donation item for children places.

I use my strip dies all the time. You said you didn't want them but I think you should rethink that as we need 2 1/2" strips all the time and the precuts are not always accurate and expensive. I generally get a die when i am making something new

I love my Go. I buy a die when need it along with a new mat. I keep a stack of new mats on hand. I get annoyed when some guild members say You can bring your Go and dies and we can cut our fabric. Well, no. I share dies with the ones that have a Go and we don't share mats. I didn't buy it for others not to buy one.

Look at the contents of the companion sets. Each one lists the stock number of the dies that are included. You can put those stock numbers into the search feature of Accuquilt and see exactly what you are getting. Their whole approach is that you can make 72 blocks with the cube and double it to make 72 more with the companion set added to the cube. So you could not make 144 different blocks without both. If you look at the contents of the companion set and it does what you want to do, it could work for you.

EDit-- from what I understand you have to get the Cube to buy the companion sets, correct? The cubes are so darn expensive!
no, you do not have to buy the Qube to get the Qube companion, you can use the companion without the Qube.
