We keep fighting to keep our fabric dept. We are desinated senior citzen mecka. That alone should be a reason to keep it. Our store manager is now on the city council & they help promote tourism. So I would think that alone would be a good reason to try & keep it. Hey guys lets don't get into yes fabric no fabric thing again. We have already beat it to death. I really like Walmart fabric & buy what I want.

Thank God ! our walmart was going to close down the fabric dept. but,there were enough of us said that we would stop shopping at walmart if they closed the fabric section and I guess what ? it worked! we still have our fabric dept.

I am the same way, if the fabric feels good and good quality I buy, otherwise I skip it.

My local Walmart still carries fabric and I mix and match with my LQS fabrics but with the prices going up I find myself buying more and more at Walmart, especially for backings that require a lot of yardage. I guess Joann's will be getting our fabric trade when Walmart fabric is no longer available. There are some of us who just can't afford to pay $8 or $9 a yard at the LQS. I am so glad that I stocked up before my DH retired.

The reason WM is discontinuing the fabrics is the dollar to square foot of floor space profit. WM has a designated dollar per square foot of floor space profit margin and fabrics do not meet that $ line criteria. As a shop owner I did not mind when they closed three of the local WM fabric departments within 30 miles of me. I just started stocking closeouts and bought some fabrics in quantity (50 bolts/line) to be able to offer a marble fabric at $4.00/yard. Granted you are not going to get the latest and greatest, but if you quilt and like nice florals and marbles it is easy to put together a large quilt for around $50.00. I have some lower income customers (which, by the way, are treated the same as the large spenders) that just love these fabrics. They don't care that it's not the latest print. I have tried to accomodate ALL of my customers as best I can afford it. They keep coming back and buying and that tells me they do appreciate my efforts. It's a "best of both worlds" as they get better quality fabric for their dollar and I get the sales. Most of the time they buy other items as well. As I tell my customers, "Buy the best fabric you can afford and take into consideration the final product you are making." If you are making a quilt that is going to be around and passed down from generation to generation, then buy top grade fabrics, if you are making a quilt you know may end up under Dad changing the transmission out in the family car, then re-think what fabrics you are buying. Maybe when the new CEO comes in, those of us who miss the fabric departments can re-express our issues and win for a change.

I work at a Joanns and do buy fabric there, when it's on sale or I have a coupon. I also buy fabric at walmart. I have one about 5 miles from me that still has fabric. Last Chistmas I saw 3 bolts of fabric that all matched for $3.00 a yard. There was 7 yards on each bolt and I bought all 3 bolts. I had a friend that had just got married and I made her a quilt for her present. It wasn't the "best" material, but it was all the same. The quilt turned out beautiful and she loved it. That's all that counted.......

VIP and A. E. Nathan. Please don't overlook Blank Fabrics if you are opening or you already own a fabric store. Wal Mart did not handle Blank Fabrics, but I think they rival the most prestigious brands handled by LQS. JoAnn handles some, but they are scattered throughout the rest of the stock, so they are hard to find in the store. froggyintexas

Me too. I go by the feel and confirm that it is 100% cotton. I like to buy the Walmart fabrics especially for backings. We're lucky in Cairo that we still have fabric at Walmart. All other fabric is 25 miles away.
