I have been told by many quilt shops that if the quilt has many colors in it to use a gray thread, it blends very well.

Do you remember which magazine has that pattern? (I have stacks of magazines on my sewing room shelves, but don't have the patience to flip through each one to find this pattern!)

I found it! McCall's Quilting, America Makes Fast Quilts, Autumn 2009. The pattern is called Scrappity-do-dah. I think I've seen it a few times in my travels, maybe even with a different name.

I love all the ideas - today I will (hopefully! as long as my "stuff" gets done...) start playing around with them and get quilting. I am especially drawn to the idea of something circular to counteract the linear nature of the quilt. Might be interesting. I do have variegated thread, too, so I will play with that.
I'm glad someone else found the pattern - but I found it in McCalls' Quilting mag, August 2007. The pattern was called Trading Patches, and it was featured on the cover. I never noticed the cover before today!! But I'm glad I did, bc it showed how they quilted it - feathers radiating out from each lattice cross, into the squares created. Another good idea, though I've never made feathers. I will post pics when it is done!

Just to say that I love the effects gained from this pattern. You did a great job. Good luck with the quilting.

My friend unwinds different spools of thread and lays the thread across the quilt. It kind of gives you an idea of how the color will look on the quilt. Some of my favorite quilts have been quilted by an unexpected color that made the other colors in the quilt pop.

i think a circular pattern would play really well against all the straight lines. maybe in the center of the squares.

If you've never done feathers before, might I suggest a wonderful book titled, "Hooked On Feathers" by Sally Terry.
It's a really easy way to make feathers without needing to backtrack over previous stitching lines - like traditional feathers do. I highly recommend this book. You do need to practice drawing them either on paper or a dry erase board (really saves on paper), before fmq, but they turn out so nice.
