looking at your gm's, now i have some questions about mine. on mine, there is a little hole to the right of the spindle. it's almost totally surrounded by metal. there's another on the left side, no metal. on gm's i see that the bobbin-winding wheel rubber is white. on mine it's black. on gm's (is that the belt?) the belt appears to be flat and whitish. on mine it's round and black rubber.

billy, i know you're lurking, so can i also get a new ring for the bobbin winder? that's about to go.
My bobbin winder is actually gray but I think it used to be black. It's faded and also cracked. I need a new one also. The belt is black (probably dust you saw) but it is flat. I need a manual also. Said online that there wasn't one available. And I also have the holes you were talking about. Wonder what they're for.

i researched it before i posted and i know it was made in scotland, in clydebank, outside edinburgh, in 1953. since then, i looked up singer 99K and saw pix and they were exactly the same.

do you have a pic of the 201?
My serial # is EJ257447 and also says 99K.

When I see the great condition your "find" is in, I could just sit down and cry. A few years ago my DH "surprised" me with an 1896 Singer treadle machine in one of those cabinets that have the box cover. I'm sure, at one time, it was a gorgeous machine. But it needs so much help now, and I don't know where or how to start. The cabinet has veneer issues. It is in dire need of cleaning. The decals are mostly worn away, etc. etc. etc. It has been hogging space in my overfilled sewing room and I don't know what to do with it. It will hurt him tremendously if I get rid of it. He already says I don't "use" it. teeheehee Pardon my venting. I just want to tell you how gorgeous your machine is.

I don't know if you are talking to me or butterflywing but mine was my grandmothers. I love it. As for yours, I still would keep it, but I'm a packrat. I try not to get rid of anything "sewing" which is why my sewing room is packed. I did clean and organize so now I'm justified. I'm the only one in there anyway except for my cats and dogs when I'm sewing.

:D

i have a feeling that the beeswax also diminishes the value, but i don't know who to ask. the wax seals in the spoiled, flaking original finish and i don't think that's what we want to do. maybe just let it flake and leave it alone.

billy can get the bobbin winder rubber ring if you want to replace it for use.

I found here in Australia you can go to certain sewing machine shops and get belts for most old machines if you ask. They usual order them in so give it a try, it is worth asking your local shop.
