I have sent one out.But I am on fixed income and can't afford to send them out.So I am doing my own with a pounce pad and stencils and FMQ works for me.

I love making tops, but I hate the quilting part. So, I send mine out. I'm happy and I'm helping a long armer make a living.

Small quilts I do on my domestic Juki. Most quilts I do on my Tin Lizzie on a frame. Much faster on the Tin Lizzie, and I get more creative! I limit myself to straight or serpentine on a domestic machine, go on to all kinds of free motion designs, pantographs, stencils with the Tin Lizzie.

How can I learn to hand quilt? I have vague memories of quilts my grandmother did by hand. Many years ago as I am 69 so you can guess how long ago. I really want to try handwork but my not so good friend Arthur interferes with a lot of my hand crafts. He is not a friend he is a painLOL>Arwin

Well, I've done little ones and big ones and even though the big ones aren't the most professional looking, I can say I did it from start to finish.
I'd love to send this one ugly annoying quilt of mine out to have done, but I didn't realize the back needs to be bigger than the front when on a frame.. and guess who doesn't have any more fabric.. and then there is the cost.. although it's not a big quilt, it's still money that needs to be paid out, plus the postage x 2, so I just muddle with them all myself... until I can get my own machine.
Ooh and if you're wondering about the ugly annoying quilt that I spoke of.. well it's back in the bag, in a drawer so I don't have to look at it. Out of sight, out of mind!!

Most LA quilters need an extra 8 inches on both top and sides because of how the quilt goes in the frame and the quilting that is done. However, if you are not picky, just add fabric that you do have to the backing to get your size that you need. Just try to make it as few seams as possible.

My mom bastes the 3 pieces together. Then she has a big frame, like embroidery hoops, and straight stitches a section at a time. Another way uses 1x2 boards and clamps. Depends on what you want to do.

I'm like you. It would be like having a child and giving it to someone else to raise. I love to quilt them. Do mostly hand quilting but am beginning to do more with the machine. Some in the ditch and practicing fmq. Many people I know though don't like to quilt them either way but love to piece so send them out to have them done. I would with the really big ones but can't afford to do so. They look great done on the longarm though.

I hand quilt all of mine from baby to queen size. I use a lap frame . this enables me to spend time with my DH in the evenings and also work on my quilts.
