I love your chicken bag. My Mon used to order 100 baby chicks and they would come in the mail in a box about a yard square and about 6 inches deep. She would rig up a light bulb to keep them warm, then when they were big enough to jump out of the box and run around the house, they would be put outside in the chicken house, to be tended by "Mama Hen." It was so funny to see her try to get all those chicks under her wings - she poked them in from the front, and they popped out from ther back! We petted that hen so much ! - we had no dog or cat at that time.

Ramona, that was such a nice story. thank you for sharing it. I came along in 1980..so my idea of future dresses are a little different. But i beat it was a simpler time way back when.

Again, I am a 1952 model but visited with my GM so much. She had an old treadle machine and when I was about 7 or 8 and decided I wanted to learn to sew. Guess what--she sat me down at that machine and it was love at first site.

My GM didn't drive and depended on a neighbor to take her to "town" once a week. The local feedstore had chicken feed in the fabric bags. Here we would go--to get feed and pick out a pretty fabric for me to sew.

I have not thought of that in a while. Thanks for sparking the memory.

Well I am right there with you as well. I had all my dresses made from feedsacks, and I love the 1930's fabrics today. I wish that there was more of them out there to purchase. In my area you can't find them at all. Have to order them from on line, if you can find them. Lots of good memories about your story, I did the same thing as you when going to the feed store. LOL LOL Great Memories.

I was born in the '40's but I did wear feed sack dresses. My favorite was a light lavendar flowered fabric, and it had some orange centers in the flowers; gee that was a long time ago - but I loved that dress... and mom gave it to my teacher so she could put crepe paper ruffles all over it for a play I was in in country school - the teacher asked afterwards if she could keep the dress, and my mother said yes! I was so hurt, I could hardly breathe after that give-away of my favorite dress; and my heart ached because of it - and mom never knew I loved that dress that much! To this day, my favorite colors range in the lavenders and many times my mind goes back to my dress gone astray! I wonder what ever happened to it.

I grew up in the 70s but heard all about the 1930s from my great grandparents & their daughters (my gradma and great aunt). To this day, I still love 30s prints. They remind me so much of my great grandma. I'm almost finished constructing the pieces of Dear Jane in 30s repros as a tribute to her.

I have some of my great grandma's fabric & treadle box, too. I wrote a post on another site about it, with photos. Will add the address if anyone would like to check it out.

A friend liked the post so much, she sent me a huge box of vintage 30s fabrics. They're really neat! Photos are on my blog under popular posts 'mail call'.

I was born in 1939, so my memories are more from the 40's. However we still had the feedsacks. I can remember my mom making daddy's shorts (underwear) from them. Many were used for cup towels. Some made into curtains and other household decorations and yes we did get clothes made from them also. The women would trade with each other to get enough of one pattern to make their project. My grandmother would help my mom get the amount needed and vise versa. They were really good times. Familys were closer than they are today and everyone helped everyone. At least that is the way it was in our families. Thanks for the memories.

I did not show up until 1951, yes I just turned 60, but I can almost see and smell the feed store. What fun it would be to sit on the feed sack and feel the grain moving around inside it. I bet there was a cat or two running around taking care of mice too. Thank you for such a wonderful story.

I love the 1930's repo fabric. I am building a stash to do something wonderful with it.

i'm a late 40's model--but i remember the wonderful quilts my grandmother made with the fabrics and feed sacks from the 30s. when i'd sleep overnight on their farm, she would tuck me in with my favorite quilt--a bowtie pattern, i called it--and it was a pleasure, even then, to find the matching fabrics from bowtie to bowtie. it was thick, and tied, because of the heavy wool batting. it is my great joy, now, to be the caretaker of that quilt, and of several others that she and my other grandmother made. those feedsack and scrappy quilts are still my favorite ones. and i love the repro fabrics that are being reissued--many of the prints are in that bowtie quilt.

I've been collecting authentic feed sack fabrics and reproductions for a while. The real ones are too precious to me to use! I'm still waiting to find a good pattern for my 30's quilt... I love these fabrics.

Thank you all for your stories.
