I have a Benina 440 and run into that a lot. It usually means the tension dissc has a bit of lint or something caught in it. I run a bit dental floss around between the discs. Ussually works.

BTW, congrats on getting it running again without a service call. Everything I knew to try had already been suggested by other members. I have had tension issues with a machine and posted questions and these are the same suggestions I got. I ended up getting everything ironed out also. I think I had lint or thread between the tension discs.

The tension may be wrong, and/or you may not have lowered the foot! Also maybe you could check whether the machine is threaded correctly.

Are you using the same thread in the top and the bobbin? Sometimes if I use on brand on top and a different type on the bottom I have serious problems. Just a thought.

If the loops are on the bottom, the problem is usually with the top tension. If the problem was with the stitches on top. then the problem would probably be with the bobbin.

Check your thread. Some colors tend to not come straight. I mean that they have little knots every so many inches or whatever. Just like some yarns do. The darker the thread the more likely the chance.

what kind of foot are you using. for straight lines use a walking foot, for curves a darning foot or specially made one for quilting. that should solve the problem

Check to see if the bobbin thread is wound around the shuttle. I just bought a 301 and had the same problem. Once I got all the thread out it sewed just fine.
