I've heard that scientists believe that socks are the larval form of coat hangers.

This is based on the statistical correlation of socks that go missing in the washer/dryer to the otherwise unexplainable increase in the number of coat hangers in closets. The socks aren't really missing, they've just molted and turned into coat hangers....like caterpillars turning into butterflies. ;)

I use mine (unfolded) to grap stuff that falls between the washer and dryer.

When Cabbage Patch dolls were the rave, like the American Girl is now, I made lots of outfits for them.

I had no way to display them. So DH went to his workshop and made a jig using a piece of plywood and dowel rods.

He then bent the wire hangers around his jig form and I had little wire hangers to display my outfits.

What a market for them again now! Good to sell to those American Doll folks.

If you have Nursing or assisted living homes in your area, you may want to see if they need them. My sister requests our extras on occasion for a lady she does caretaking for who lives in assisted living.

Good luck.

I take them apart, bend to make a hook on each end and use them for hangers on a tree branch for birdfeeders, when I can't reach the branch.

If you do not crochet, you can still cover with yarn. I am not sure I can explain it but it is kind of like knotting the yarn onto the hanger. Or making an applique stitch.

I remember people making those Christmas trees with the lights and garland with them. :)

Oh I remember using three wire hangers taped together, here and there. and then using two colors of yarn to cover the entire hanger. Made some really nice, no-slip hangers. I wish I could remember how to make them but it didn't require crochet. Also, one year I made a Christmas tree with using several and tying on garlands, lights and mini ornaments, too. Memory isn't what it used to be and I'm sorry I don't have directions to make either.

Can't see the stitches used on the hangers, but they are lovely! Would you PM me some tips on how-to-do these or post here. I do crochet and have yarn I need to use. Thanks so much in advance.

A long, long time ago one of my friends crocheted a yarn covering over the total hanger. I still have them and use them (over 50+ years). They are so nice, and even slacks don't slide off of them.
