I don't agree with the "If you can't say something nice, say nothing" idea...that silence can be as hurtful as the snarky comment because it's obvious that you don't see anything that you approve of, especially if you've complimented someone else's piece....

There IS something nice you can say about ANY quilt, no matter what the quality of the work is...gush about the colors, pick one particular piece of fabric you like and go into great detail about how you love it, and where in the world did she ever find it? Most won't notice that you didn't compliment the actual quilt...they're going to be pleased that you liked something about it. Compliment how straight the seams are or how you like how the binding was done....find SOMETHING nice to say.

Constructive critiques are only that if they're invited...until then, they're ego busters....

That's sad. We all do what we can.

I have been in that position and it hurts when that happens. I always find something good to say even if it is just " I like the blue color in that". When folks are encouraged they strive harder.

Don't let this stop you! Both the guilds I belong to (Lebanon and Salem) are filled with helpful, encouraging quilters. I was a newby when I joined the first guild, and I found nothing but support there.

I hope others went and smoothed over the "bad" review" and I also hoped they verbally "spanked" the inappropriate commenter.

We all had to start somewhere, and we should always give encouragement to each other. This group is fantastic supporting everyone. That person needs to step down off their pedestal and get back to reality!!

How cruel. I'm just starting out and I would be very discouraged by negative comments.

We have all had to learn from scratch, whether it be cooking, raising children or quilting and sewing. I applalud anyone who tries somethng new and enjoys it. They always should be encouraged, not belittled. Heaven forbid that woman should see my quilts!!
