I just got a 403a in mint condition. I love it!! It is even more of a work horse than my 201 or my 222, not that I don't love them also.
I started playing around with the free motion embroidery. Had a dickens of a time getting the bobbin thread up into the hoop. I think it is because the bottom layer in insul-brite.

You are so lucky! I used a 401A for 40 years, and sewed for the public. Had to replace it because I literally wore out the metal parts! It's a wonder!

Congratulations on a great buy and lovely machine. Glad you are enjoying her. Did you give your machine a name?

Looks similar to my Singer 328K we bought Nov. 1963. It still works I use it for heavy sewing and zigzag stitch. Tougher than nails.
Yours looks great.

that is just like the one that I remember my Grandmother sewing on. Don't know what happened to it after she passed away, but she sure made alot of nice things on it.

Congratulations to you! You got an wonderful machine for a great price!! I'm still kicking myself for not getting the same model a couple of months ago for about the same price. Argh! You can buy the bobbin winder rubber tire at many different places. I buy mine through Sew-Classic for under a $1.

Have you cleaned and lubed her up? Did you get a manual with her, too? I see you got a straight stitch throat plate, too! That goes a long way toward making piecing even more accurate. Enjoy her for a long, long time.

My mom has this same machine. I was a little girl when my dad gave it to her for Christmas. She used that machine until about 8 years ago and it still works fine. That machine went through making clothing for 4 children, endless sets of drapes, home decor, gifts and just about anything you can sew. That machine was always on her sewing table and the ironing board up beside it. She uses her Bernina now and doesn't sew as much but the scenario is still the same.
