Firemen collecting money on the street

I like being reminded of the men and women who help respond to our emergencies and with postage as high as it is for a mailer....well you can't blame them. I was secretary of a volunteer fire co.and I can tell you it takes a lot of donation money just to make up the cost of the mailers.

After seeing such a bad accident I understand your concern for their safety and for those in the cars!!! There needs to be a safer way to do it - this can distract drivers - usually not enough time to did thru purse etc to get money out anyway lol I agree - need to do it in safer manner!!!

I have to jump in with my 2 cents...my husband and oldest son were on our local volunteer fire dept for years and they had a fundraiser like this once a year. These men volunteer their time, gas money, missed sleep, not to mention their wifes missed sleep, to run in a flash in the middle of the night or in the middle of a meal to help someone in need. It is a hot dangerous job and I am so blessed we have them! That being said, once a year, I can handle the boot collections cause it is always your choice to give or not...we donate quilts to area fire depts to raffle off. Some of these smaller fire dept have run out of their yearly budget for gas, assisting other counties with all the fires popping up across Texas.

Our Mayor here in Anchorage put a stop to our firemen doing this on paid time. Our city is in financial crisis due to the previous mayor pulling some crafty business with union contracts etc. so cuts have been made including this activity. Also we have some problems with other organizations wanting fair use of our firemen to support their causes. So the Mayor put a stop to it all the way around. The firemen can choose to do it on their own time but not on paid city time. It will probably come to that in many cities across America due to fiances and organizations that are less than desirable wanting equal use of city personnel.

It think it is a great way to help a good cause, either I have extra change and I give or I don't, but you shouldn't feel guilty if you choose not to give. Having been on the volunteering side of the collection, you certainly don't expect everyone to give and you appreciate everyone who does. And volunteers don't want anyone to feel bad if they choose not to give, but it is also great exposure for the groups who are doing the fund raising.

Sounds like a safe way to collect money.We've seen this done in a couple cities where traffic is always crazy.
