Hi and welcome to the board from Iowa. My first quilt was a rail fence.

http://www.quilterscache.com/

This site has many blocks and I think it would be a great place to start.

Welcome from Grundy Co. Illinois!!

If getting started in quilting is your goal - Go to www.quilterscache where you can find tons of free patterns for individual blocks. Each of these blocks can be made into individual pot holders - and just in time for Christmas stocking stuffers too! Go ahead - practice on your family

Welcome! And you're smart to start with a project that can be completed and not be overwhelmed by a full size bed quilt. Take photos and share them with us.

Welcome Carol from St. Charles, Il. Pieced Tree has alot of easy table runners. They are laminated cards you can buy at LQS(local quilt store). The 10 minute table runner is really easy. It has only four seams.
