AARP Membership
#31
We belonged for 11 years and have decided not to renew our membership this year. The only benefit we ever got from it was a $2 discount on a room. Hardly worth the membership fee, not even 10% off the room cost.

We have our auto and homeowners insurance thru them and saved a lot over State Farms (with multiple discounts?). We switched several years ago but have not compared rates in awhile - maybe it is time to do it.

Although I do use the member discount, I too have some concerns. They are "advocates" for our elder population and I am not always in agreement with their perspectives. Do I want to contribute to an organization that does not support my view? On the other hand their website is valuable. Lots of tips and information.

I didn't renew my membership for 2 reasons. First, they get a kickback on everything you buy through them like insurance. Second, they were a big supporter of Obamacare. While health care needs reform, making it more expensive and requiring people purchase it isn't a good idea. JMHO I know there are those that disagree.

No benefit. Movies, Goodwill, restaurants, hotels, and the like, will give senior discounts, often without being asked. Insurance companies are getting competitive enough that a membership has no real advantage. I thought the magazine was depressing. It talked about old people. Although my chronological age qualified me for AARP, I was still physically and mentally young, and have an equally young mate. Dropped them after the first year because I got sooooo much junk and calls targeted to seniors I felt as though I was being preyed upon for marketing gimmicks.

AARP is NO FRIEND to seniors.
They lobby in Washington for changes in Medicare so that they can then be the "go between" to sell supplemental insurance and make a profit. Their ads make it sound as if they support seniors and senior's benefits. The only one who benefits is AARP.
