Default About to make my 1st Quilted Jacket:-) Any advise?

I am about to head off to the sewing room to make me a quilted jacket. I am wanting to make it to wear to sporting events to show my school spirit. I am thinking on doing it like our schools Lettermans' jacket but I was going to switch mine to blue sleeves & a white chest area. I also wanted to put a large S on the back for the school. I 'was' thinking of piecing the letter S for the back but now I am leaning on just using my Cricut to cut out a Varsity style S out and just ironing it on? Our school colors also have a small amount of red so I thought I would use that for my trim.

I guess my first steps will be to cut out my pattern and then I was going to sew the amount of blue & white fabric needed together and load it on my short arm machine. If anyone has any tips for me, ideas or any pictures I would love the help. I know how to quilt but this will be my first Jacket!

My son plays football & wrestles. I was also thinking on putting his number on my jacket but if I do that I will need to make another one for wrestling. What do u guys/gals think?

Be sure you cut out the pattern pieces a little on the large size or the layers will make the jacket too small when you sew the pieces together.

Thanks, I also read somewhere you should wash it after quilting before you cut out.

What kind of batting will you use? Batting will greatly affect how the jacket feels. You want something fairly thin and soft. I know for ladies' clothing, silk batting is preferred because of its soft drape.

I made a quited jacket last yr. I first quilted the fabric that I was going to need. I did mine in sections for each part of the jacket since I only have a reg machine. It turned out really nice; it was done in Batik fabric. Good luck with it.

I did not cut the actual pieces (arm, sleeve, etc) until after I quilted the fabric so I knew it would fit right.

The easiest way to make a quilted jacket is to start with a sweatshirt. Ugly Cook from this board did a wonderful tutorial for it! I'll see if I can find the thread and get back to you!

Found it before my editing time ran out---http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...et-t48923.html

    Good luck!!

I made quilted jackets as gifts some time ago and also quilted the fabric before cutting.

I've made 14 sweatshirt jackets. Took off the cuffs and opened the front and sides. Added 1.5 inch strips all over. Can use several colors or match colors. I did one diaginal half from bottom the up and down rest of the front and back. Added a collar and placket on the front and buttons and buttonholes. Looking forward to making one on a demin shirt. Haven't decided which colors or which way I'll start. Lots of fun.
