How about this pattern that I used to make my niece's quilt? It keeps your fabric pieces intact.

I would do big blocks to show case the beautiful fabrics with black sashing. love them!

I immediately thought of the 10 Minute block - it uses 5 - 10" blocks. One in each corner and one in middle. If you used solid black or coordinating fabric for two of the blocks and maybe a different one for the center. I just made two 10 minute blocks and they're super easy and you get a lot of bang for the buck.
