Came back to read other reply's. I do see many use the liquid Sta flo and mix 1-1. I haven't been using starch for quilting, but I am going to start. I do however, make my own starch to iron clothes and I make mine on the stove with box'd kind( not sure of name). I did notice a smell if not used soon enough, so to combat that, I make a thick batch, put it in a jar in fridge, and when I need starch I take some from jar, add to hot tap water and no smell.

Hey Grannyrosie - yes starch will sour if not kept in the fridge. Except the Sta-Flo kind I buy by the quart at the grocery store. They must put some kind of preservative in it. When I made my own, I always seemed to get lumps so, I just buy Sta-Flo and I don't have to worry about it souring. A quart lasts me a looooong time.

I use both as the occasion arises. Since I have a Rowenta Steam Generator I have to press a button to get steam. So, I always have either/or at my beck & call. But for the most part I use a dry iron after I have sprayed starch on my blocks.

I was taught to never use "starch" on my quilting fabric because it contains flour and will attract insects if stored. I use crisp spray sizing on my fabric. I spray on the right side and iron dry. It gives a smooth workable finish. I have tried Best Press and did not get the best results. The brand of sizing I use is the green can of Magic Sizing.

I only starch my material as I'm piecing the quilt then I wash it. Doesn't have time for bugs to get in it.

I saw a man buy 18 cans of spray starch at Walmart and couldn't get up the nerve to ask him what he was going to use it on. Still wondering....
