I have the commercial kind of carpet you find in many offices. I do have wood floors but my house is not on a foundation, therefore it does get cold. I find this type of carpet very easy to keep clean.

My sewing room is in the basement, where we are remodeling. As much as I would prefer installing laminate, my feet have become too sensitive to cold floors, so not an option. I rarely use pins, so its not a problem and my rulers don't chip and crack when they fall and hit the floor.

I lived for years and years with carpet.. Never again.. No matter how much you vacuum and/or clean it, very shortly it's dirty... even if you can't see it. I have wood floors now, finally, and when I see how much dirt and dust and other stuff I clean up I can easily see why carpets are like they are.
As far and making the room colder, I don't think a carpet would actually make the room any warmer. It may make your feet warmer, but a pair of slippers or shoes takes care of that. Floors are insulated generally.. of course there are some that are not, slab floor for one, but still I would choose any other floor covering over carpet for a sewing room.

I would put plain plywood before I put carpet. There is so much dust from sewing and I don't want it sinking into the carpets. I prefer seeing those dust bunnies in the corners and I know I need to get them up. I hate carpet...can you tell?

I have wood floors in my sewing room and a rug under my sewing chair. Sure I have to straighten it every now. Also another rug for my loyal helper the Labrador. Actually works well because when I straighten my rug he gets a tummy tickle.

I have wood floors in the entire house except the entrance (in Sweden we don't have shoos inside the house) and in the bathrooms where we have tiles. I'd love carpet but we normally don't have that in Sweden and since we have underfloor heating in the entire house it would be bad economy to insulate the radiator with carpet.
I have a sewing chair which makes bad, bad marks in the floor. But on the plus side I can be on the floor with my cutting mat.

I could get my brother's to install hardwood floors throughout my house for just the cost of the hardwood flooring.
But I don't have the heart to ask two old guys to do it....LOL
I get new carpeting next year with income tax.
