I think you are more than entitled to a good dose of sympathy and maybe chocolate and a adult beverage.

Oh my! So sorry! But I bet the applique idea will work great.

Not time to stop feeling sorry for yourself just yet. This is a terrible thing to happen and I am sorry for you. Applique and some hand quilting will be the quickest and closest match for you. Maybe you should rename this quilt. Blood Sweat and Tears.
Sending you a quilty hug.

Hope you found what was in the machine to do this damage. If you can take the agitator our I would do that to see if something is stuck underneath also look all over the tub to make sure something is not sticking through to the inside of the tub.

Sorry this happened to you.

Please let us know - if you figure it out - what caused the damage

What a bummer! I agree with all the others that appliqué is the best solution.

The problem with the machine seem to be roughness around the top edge of the tub. The quilt got up over the edge somehow. I suppose from just being too big. The spin cycle drug the quilt around on the rough edge. I am seriously considering a new machine.

As for the fix, I have a plan. I have extra pieces that match the front part that was damaged and extra backing fabric. I will pick out the quilting in about a 9 inch square area and applique the appropriate pieces over the holes and then requilt that area. It won't be perfect, but then again, it wasn't perfect before. I'm not capable of perfect.

It should be done within a week or so. I'll post pictures. Thanks for all the support. Only you all can really understand how I felt when I opened the machine and saw that big hole.

I have put a label on the back over a hole before (don't ask!).

How awful for you, but I am sure will come up with a very creative solution.

My daughter has a dog that chews the quilts I make for her. I always keep the fabric and then mend the quilt by hand. She has one waiting for me right now, I always threaten to pull the dog's teeth out, but so far Norah Jean is still strutting around (she must love the taste of my fabric ?). I know this doesn't comfort you, but you can mend it. Just find out what happened so it doesn't happen again.
