My least favorite quilt as far as how it feels and drapes was done using a 80/20 blended batting as it is what the quilt store I took it to for quilting used. Unfortunately, I don't remember if it was Hobbs or Pellon.

As I get older, I've become so allergic to wool I can't use it; even with a layer between, it makes me itch. I've had to get rid of all wool clothing, too.

The Warm Company has a product out right now, Warm and Plush, that is 50% more cotton and is needled rather than using a scrim. Quilting has to be a bit closer (no more than 6" apart, rather than 10" that W&N allows). It's available packaged for a queen size at about $29.

Alternatively, you can also use two layers of W & N. Or two layers of quilts, which we often do here near the Canadian border.

Keep the AIR out and the body heat IN. I don't know how you guys can live in such cold weather.
I lived in Germany for four years, cold as #^$&. I've lived in Minot North Dakota for 6 months, never Again !
Lived in Missouri for 3 years, hated the snow. Now in Florida, and love the weather, however, thank goodness for air conditioners in the summer.

In Germany we used big feather bed pillows that covered the entire bed.

you can purchase a cover for your bed that is a electric style.. it has two controls and you can set each side.. a heavy quilt is not good. loose quilting makes it softer and warmer..

We have here Electric blankets,that we put under the bottom sheet,there is usually two controls, it keeps the bed ever so warm and cozy

On a budget I have gone to thrift stores and looked for older blankets wool or cotton or some with a ply blend. I was them let them shrink, the condition of the blanket does not matter much because that wont be seen. Some were just a dollar, so that was a great deal. The color was important because dark would not work for me well. I have seen batting wool inexpensive at Overstock.com

Thanks everyone for the advice , I think I will look into some of the blankets at the Salvation Army store as I really don't have a lot of money to spend right now.. That seems like a good idea and would never have though of that.. if I can't find any blankets I will look into some of the other ideas that you wonderful ladies have suggested...Thank you everyone...

I'm not so sure on what you can use but please don't make it to heavy! I have one that was given to me by an elderly gentleman that his mother made some 60 years ago. It's so heavy that I feel to confined and have to kick it off. Now it's folded setting in the closet. But what she done was made one side exactly like the other! there is no front or back, and each square is so think! She put an enormous amount of work into this so that's why I can't part with it, sentimental value for the most part. Good luck on your warm light weight quilt!!

I made a quilt for my very cold natured husband and used a wool batting. He loves it and says it's warmer than our other 80/20 batting quilts. Hope this info helps.

Yup, feather beds!! Gramma used to make those ( Polish). Warm as toast and light as a "feather". Now they are called down comforters.....

As far as loading a quilt with multiple layers/ types of batting, backing.....why not just add a blanket to the bed coverings? I always have one on the bench at the foot of beds in my house.......I personally don't want to sleep between the mattress and box spring!
