"Japanese Brother" sewing machine it said. It looked a little too plasticky for the era of Made in Japan. Then I took a closer look at the photos and giggled. I hope the seller finds a buyer who will appreciate this.

Read the ad. The bobbin is not included with the machine. Must be one of them rare vintage bobbins that are hard to impossible to find!

Probably was stepped on. Empty clear bobbins are easy to lose! I've seen some colored transparent bobbins and think they are great. Less likely to lose and the amount of bobbin thread remaining can still be seen.

I was "antiquing" this weekend (trying in vain to find gifts) and I always come across (overpriced) machines at the antique malls, but I always want to look anyway, just to see, and if it's a Singer I'm always curious to see if I can correctly identify the model since I'm still learning.

So I walk in and immediately spotted a rather worn looking sewing machine case. Pop it open and it's a Singer 66 redeye. Turns nicely but some questionable home-made looking wiring, some rusty gouges on the wheel, pinrash on the arm, general grunge on the body & bed, and and decals overall are really worn. I'd have called it a "fixer". Price was $150. I laugh to myself and start to put the lid back on when a man next to me comments, "Isn't that a lovely old machine?". I hold the lid aside and I look at it again and sort of laugh and say something like, "Yeah, these old Singers are tough to beat...although looks like someone beat this one pretty good!" He makes the "O" mouth surprised face at me and then bristles all up..."Beat? It is not BEAT. It works GREAT, you didn't even try it! NO RESPECT!!" and he all but yanks the lid out of my hands, scoops up the machine and bustles it all away....oops, I didn't realize he was the owner, I thought he was just some random customer! My DH was nearby and started laughing at me, "You make friends everywhere, don't you?" LOL

So lesson learned...don't giggle out loud, you'll anger the natives. LOL

This isn't an antique but is about 20 years old. Look at the pictures of the bobbin area and the repaired foot pedal.

I have a Pfaff of about the same age and it has no oxidation or rust on the metal parts. My mother has her Singer from 1955 and there is no rust on it. Not a bit. We live in the south where there is a lot of humidity but we also take care of our belongings.
