PLEASE check out this ruler; it is one I require in almost all my classes. I personally use it constantly in my own piecing and squaring up sections of a block. It is the ONLY ruler marked like this, with SOLID 1/8th inch lines in two directions. Comes in 4", 6" and 8" sizes.

Well this certainly sparked a lot of discussion! I'm glad. And guess what I found.....yep, I had that ruler!! I knew I had seen one like that before. Hidden way back in my supply drawer but I dug and am so glad I found it! I want to make the Civil War Sampler blocks from Barbara Brackman's book. And almost every page calls for a 1/8" to 7/8" measurement for one or more blocks. I thought it would be so much easier to be able to just glance at the ruler for that marking instead of having to count and re-count (measure twice, cut once) every time. Next question, do you think it's okay to cut these blocks bigger and then cut them down if the directions call for the 8th inch measuring?? I'm confused. If that's ok, why doesn't it just say cut 8" for example and cut down to finished size block? Believe me, I'm not expert enough and I am a real math dummy when it comes to things like this! Thanks all!

The ruler I have has dark black lines with a little number on the 7/8, 1 7/8, 2 7/8, spots. in other words, it is divided up into 7/8th inch increments. Really easy to cut that size block. Yep, all my other rulers do have the 1/8th markings but this is specifically for 7/8 inch cuts. Thanks for all the great input!

Harbor Freight has a roll of inches( ruler) that you get free with a coupon. My husband gave me one knowing fractions are one of my short comings. I use that.<object type="cosymantecnisbfw" cotype="cs" id="SILOBFWOBJECTID" style="width: 0px; height: 0px; display: block;"></object>
