I think it was metal. I have a plastic Dritz one and also a metal one from Joann's but the pins go every which way. when you drop the pins into the one I saw they automatically positioned themselves with the heads of the pins going to the outside of the bowl. I will be checking out the dollar stores - I never thot of that.

And from Harbor Freight, they are on sale for $2.99 and I love all three of mine and will probably buy a couple more so that I have one at each station in my quilt room. And don't worry, you can throw a pin at them from 3 feet away and those little bowls grab 'em!!!!

My sewing machine is in a metal standing frame and I keep a magnetic bowl stuck to the leg making the pins very easy to drop into. I mostly use mine as a catcher when sewing.
I also use these at work in my office. They're stuck to the side of my filing cabinet and hold my paper clips and bulldog clips sorted by size. VERY handy.

Does anyone know what these are called, who makes them or where I could get one?
I wondered about using something with a strong magnet like that around a computerized sewing machine. Perhaps a sewing machine dealer could give us some answers. I will be sure and ask my Bernina dealer the next time I visit her shop. I don't want to damage my Bernina.

Dollar stores carry them and they are much cheaper than Amazon. Here is what they look like. (Round ones)

I got mine at Harbor Freight -there were 3 small sizes to choose from -perfect for the sewing room and I got 2 large ones for the garage.

I thought that you could not use magnets around computerized machines. Is this still true? I do have older machines. I believe I was told that when I bought my HUS.

It is this one. It is brand new. Not a Dritz. Ask your fav quilt shop to order them $19.95 retail. Cool!
