I do some of my best ideas while still in bed. As to the number/letters pins, I too thought them too expensive so I think someone mentioned this idea here but not sure. Anyway, I needed to pick up more of my pins with the yellow balls on one end and looked for some alphabet beads you use to make baby bracelets that you put on a cord/string. Anyway, I slipped a bead on a pin, stuck it upsidedown on my ironing board and put a drop of Elmer's Glue - non washable, let it dry. Made up 6 sets of them as I knew someone might want a set once they saw them. Got the non washable glue by accident so looking for ways to use it up. Have used these pins while working on a bargello and worked great. Sure cheaper making these alphabet pins than buying them ready made.

I wrote on my flower pins and then put them in an old prescription bottle. Then I labeled the top of the bottle as to color of the flower. Unfortunately, my flowers were of the tiny variety and the numbers are hard to read.
I recently used pieces of paper with the row number on it and stuck the pin through the paper. It worked great too but I think I'm going to make templates like Dunster.

I made my own row and column markers by cutting "art foam" into 1" x 2" rectangles, punching a hole in the corner in far enough in for strength, then I use quilting safety pins to attach them. I can write whatever I need on them with a sharpie. I can even color code them because "art foam" is available at the dollar stores.

That is one of those DUH !! why didn't I think of it sooner ideas . I would put clear nail polish over the sharpie pen mark so it doesn't rub off after a while. I think that may happen(and to add : a friend had the letters coming off her keyboard, she took a sharpie re wrote what letters and put clear nail polish over it to prevent the letters coming off. She has loved it and only has to re polish every couple of months).
