I'm working on an owl quilt called "Hoot's Hollow" that requires a lot of 2.5" blocks. It has appliqued panels here and there in it. Perhaps that sort of thing would work with your 2" squares! The applique patterns on this one are 4 blocks high and don't go all the way across. There are 3 blocks on the other side. It's a fun pattern to do!

There are many patterns that I have found which I call 16 Square Block:

I made this one for charity:

There are nine patches that could be laid out several different ways.

I do not have a picture of it but I have seen a block where they do a 16 patch block of 2 to 2 1/2" squares and then add a triangle to each side which puts the 16 patch on point. Very nice looking block.

Here is one I want to make. It is with 2" squares, but I think 2 1/2 would work just as well. (I certainly would not trim them down!!!)

I've been saving squares for this for years. If I don't get going on it my children will be selling them at the estate sale saying, "I don't know why Mom had this huge box of these little pieces. Maybe she really was a few feet short of a full yard!" Just a suggestion.

I used 2" squares for the colors in my cathedral window quilt.

This will use a ton of those squares...I made this as a wedding present for a friend's son & new wife. It uses 2 1/2" squares & 2 1/2" sashing, but would work for your 2" squares too. Your lights could still be sprinkled throughout if you use white/white for sashing like I did. Make it whatever size you need by adding rows. Mine was 50"x62". Happy sewing!
