I frequently buy a bolt of white, black, or gray from JoAnn's with the coupon. Those are staples in my quilting.
I also have several patterns that are 2 color quilts and I usually buy a bolt of one of the colors and use it for the quilt and backing. I also wait for another coupon to get the other color.
I also bought a bolt plus more yardage to use for the Little Brown Bird quilt (background and backing) from an on-line quilt store that was going out of business and were selling it for $5.00 a yard (originally $12).
Keep in mind or make a list of the patterns you want to make and if there is a large quantity of yardage needed. It helps when you see a great sale and pass it up and then realize you could have used it for that special quilt.
I will also buy a bolt of Wonder Under or something similar with a coupon or when it is 59% off because I use that all the time for other projects such as purses, etc.

I buy 10 yards of black, gray, and white from Connecting Threads connectingthreads.com when they have sales, which is quite often. No sales tax, and free shipping if you spend $50. The fabric comes folded, so I get empty bolts from LQS to store them.

I just bought a bolt of Kona black because I keep using it up! Sometimes you'll get a price break, there are many stores on line and local stores. 5bucks a bolt, fabrics.com and tons of others. Only buy a bolt if you will use that much because the discount isn't worth it if you hold the fabric for years. It does age and can discolor.
