I live in Dallas, where we have very hot summers & very little cold weather. I second the Quilters Dream batting. One thing that helps make a quilt light is fewer piecing seams. Don't pick a pattern with a million little pieces & tons of seams.

Not sure how old your grandson is, but if he's at least 3 years old, I'd suggest wool batting (I love Hobb's Heirloom wool -- it's very lightweight & washes great). Wool is wonderful because it breathes, so it's warm in the winter & cool in the summer. I love heavy cotton quilts, but they are just too hot come summertime, so I switch to wool.
