I made a baby quilt similar to yours on my embroidery machine. It was very cute when finished. It's five years later now, and when I visited the home where it lives, I saw it. It has been washed many times and still looks beautiful. I will say it seemed to soften up, but there was no fraying of the appliques. So don't worry. You didn't make a big mistake.
