My sister’s quilt is a little short on her bed. She asked me to make matching pillow cases. Quilt background is black, blocks are batik stars. I am going to make a couple more star blocks out of leftover batiks that will go on center of pillowcase. Should I add a matching batik flange ot leave the entire background of pillowcase black?

I'd personally leave them black.

Are these pillowcases going to be used or are they more decorative pillow shams that would be removed from the bed when your sister is sleeping?

I would do the star block in the center of each, and maybe put a 1.5” batik trim piece between the body of the pillowcase and the all-black flange.

For my bed quilts I always make pillow covers because I don't like the looks of pillow tuck to go over the pillows. They end up looking like little quilts that I throw over the pillows. Sometimes no batting between top and backing. Most times I use batting and just quilt them.

I assume she'll be washing the pillowcases more frequently than the quilt? If so, remember that black fades over time. I think I'd use a coordinating batik for the pillowcases, perhaps with a black flange.

I do as Jingle says. I make shams with a zipper or velcro closure on the back. There are a couple of problems with pieced pillow cases besides the fading as mentioned by Mkotch. One is that if it's not layered and quilted the raw edges will fray out in the wash. Another is that if you put your face against the pieced area you might feel the seams. Simple is just better in a pillow case. If your sister is saying "pillow cases" maybe she means that literally and you could just make pillow cases from one or two of the fabrics to coordinate with the quilt.

Thanks everyone. She has decided on a couple pillow instead and will coordinate her pillowcases with the quilt colors
