I have also attached strips of fabric to the backing, just enough to pin to the leaders because the backing some beginners are not aware of the need for extra backing. One person brought the backing flush to the top so I had to add fabric. In this case I did not charge extra because she was new to quilting and a good friend and since then she has become my good customer. (with enough extra backing now}.

I put a 3" piece of heavy muslin on the edge of the top that will be attached to the take up roller and to the edge that is attached to the top roller. This allows me to stitch to within 1/4 inch of the fabric edge without hitting the canvas. I put it on with a long basting stitch for easy removal when done quilting.

I add 4 inches of canvas to the top and bottom of the minky i use for my backing fabric. It makes it easy to pin to my leaders. This way I don't deal with the stretchiness of the minky. Works great! Oh and I only but the minky a total of 4 inches greater than the length of the quilt.

I’ve had to do it several times when the piecer has shorted me on the backing. Honestly, I really don’t care how the piecer feels about it . . .if it’s the only way to load it on the leaders, without running out of backing at the bottom, I’m going to do it. It’s not as though the muslin will still be there when it’s returned to the customer.

I use them for the Little foot frame with my Simply Sixteen machine. I need 6” extra fabric for both top and bottom to wrap around the around the top bar. It’s hard for me to waste an extra 1/2 foot of expensive fabric when I can just baste a couple of strips along the top and bottom. By waste I mean it goes into my scraps where it may reappear sometime in the future for another project. Probably... well maybe... always hope. Basting goes quick.
