my 8900 is like this. That said I don't change to single needle plate anymore as I always use leader/enders which prevent the fabric from being pushed down the hole when you start off. You can prevent this by holding on to the threads when starting but that eats up a lot of thread.

I have only owned and operated mechanical machines starting out making clothing for myself and graduating to quilting. After switching the plates and breaking needles a few times I taught myself to automatically take two stitches using the handwheel to slowly move the needle down and back up for each stitch and have never broken another needle.

Me!! I do, I do! I rarely do decorative stitches as I hand quilt them or use a design that only needs straight lines.

I've learned by necessity to piece my quilts with the single hole plate, as it somehow seems easier. When I piece with the zigzag plate it often swallows the start of my fabric. I have the Janome MC6500 P.

I've typically only used the single hole plate if I have it available. Too many pointy triangle ends have gotten squished into the zigzag plate.

My current Bernina is smarter than me and tells me no way if I try to adjust the stitch width.

My poor portable Brother on the other hand where the default stitch is not in the middle, well -- many of us know exactly the noise of it hitting the foot and my foot has this little divot in it now.

My Pfaff creative sensation tells me when the single needle plate is on if I try to use a wider stitch.

I stick a piece of masking tape on my stitch changing lever, thanks to the woman I spoke to when calling about getting the straight stitch plate. She actually asked me if I was sure I wanted one because if I forgot and switched to zigzag I'd throw my machine's timing off. I'm sure I would have done so without her warning.

I use my single hole stitch plate a lot.
If I select a zig zag stitch with the single hole plate installed, my machine will not sew and gives me a warning on screen.

My Epic alerts you to switch plates. But I too with all my other machines have had broken needles because I either forget to change plate or foot w/single hole...and yes that foot is plastic and now has the startings of another hole beside the hole.

My single hole plate is on most of the time. I rarely zigzag. It does help with piecing points.
